I can't give any specific advice as my husband takes care of all that, but he started both our girls when they were still in JC/university - just something relatively safe and unexciting, but also lower risk. They are so flexible - you can liquidate them any time (as in you will get it within a month of redeeming it) and the interest rate prorated! FDs on the other hand, if you break them, you lose all interest. If you lock in SSBs at a low rate, just sell and re-buy when the interest is higher.</p>
