The one recommended by the orthopedic physiotherapist was a bit expensive. Her doctor’s advice is not to depend on it…so mum only used in the few months after the op as a form of support.

The normal cheap walking stick (like the one mentioned, can also be used for hiking), accords the user some amount of balancing help. But ultimately it has only 'one leg'. If requires a lot of help with the balancing, then can consider the '4-leg' walking stick (not the walking frame which requires using 2 hands to manovere). That one is very stable, and provides support as well as balance, but is a bit more cumbersome as it has 4 legs.

atrecord

Reply to Where to get Walking stick on Fri, 02 Sep 2016 14:06:09 GMT

:thankyou: schweppes, atrecord.

I will bring him along and keep in mind the pointers.

He needs it for balance - partly because he worries that he might fall. Got those wooden (or looks like wood) solid one, or those metal whole piece but hollow types with adjustable length.

If it’s only more for balancing (more so than firm support), then there is an option to get those used for hiking, which can be in 3/4 pieces screwed to tighten so that you can adjust the length. This type is lighter, can be kept more conveniently, but note that it’s not as sturdy and not meant for the full body weight to lean on. It’s quite cheap as i got one for my mum at i think $11.

My advice is to get a good one - need not be the most expensive. Just make sure that it is sturdy as the aim of the walking stick is to serve as a walking aid and to give them a sense of stability if they feel unbalanced on their feet. I would go with function over form when it comes to safety.

Mom used to use an umbrella. But after her knee replacement surgery last year, the orthopaedic surgeon recommended that a proper walking stick is a better aid than the umbrella.

When shopping for the walking stick, make sure you bring your dad along to test it out. The sticks come in varying lengths to suit people with different heights. He has to choose one that he feels most comfortable and confident with.

schweppes

Reply to Where to get Walking stick on Thu, 01 Sep 2016 10:17:58 GMT

Saw it in Big Box, Jurong.

$39

It's by a local company called Bion. If an elderly folk gets tired after walking sometime, can open up the stick, turn it into a chair when he can sit down, comfortably while waiting, or just resting the tired legs. Become a mobile walking-stick-cum-chair. Very useful !

Sometimes, old folks cannot stand too long. I bought one for my MIL (> 80 year old), because she will pant, if stand too long
