quite true...they are lazy to use their brains for simple calculation. hubby takes away the calculator occasionally to make her use mental calculation.

I usually give the letter 2-3 days in advance.

If you want to \"sweeten\" the deal, also add that you will make sure your child catches up with missed homework etc on return. That way, you are taking the responsibility and the teacher has no reason to refuse (and I agree, don't ask, just inform).

I have done it as well. And yes, I am informing and not asking for permission.
I remember sending emails to kids' teachers when they need time to study. The year when son was taking PSLE, I sent email to his form teacher to excuse him from attending school/supplementary lessons.

Likewise for certain excuse from physical training at times when kids were unwell or still recovering after an illness. There were times when the coaches ignored my message and DD or DS were made to do the trainings despite my letter. In such cases, I will be inviting the teacher in charge for a chat. 😂

I have done it a few times. Each time I wrote the truth and I stated it as I am informing the school and not asking for permission 😂 I never got an invite for a chat. I think I will be putting the teacher in a difficult situation if I ask for permission. The teacher will naturally decline our request because it is against the rule. However, if we just state it as informing the school, then the teacher has no choice but to accept our decision because we are legal guardian of our child.

My kiddo's classmate is a 童星，often not around from P1 to P3, there was once he has to keep his hair long even, for movie requirements I think. School ok with it so far, probably becos he still manage to keep himself within the top class results wise.

for those who have relatives in malaysia, schools will usually close an eye during CNY.

I think it depends on the school. Some people seem to do it with no issues; others say that teachers etc don't approve.

kids will miss out quite a bit in secondary level...and yes, be prepared to hear some sarcastic remarks especially since year end holidays are longer for secondary level.

Passed art and d&t. Next year will be “food and consumer” the whole year.
Wasn’t very hard on her this year but hope she will take more ownership and do well in order to choose subjects she likes for Sec 3.

Come to think of it, maybe it's because she did D&T whole of this year...so next year will be all about food and consumer. More interesting compared to D&T. History will be boring with post WW2 independence. It will also be human geography compared to physical geography in Sec 2. Hope she bucks up next year.

Hi Janet, is your girl's results in these subjects reflective of how interested she is in these subjects so far?
Because in our case, dd did these subjects for half a year each and so good results = like the subject; poorer score = no interest in the subject whatsoever.

i went to popular and asked to see the 'food and consumer education' title. i have already bought and wrapped the textbooks. strangely there is book 1 and book 2. any reason why? even the booklist indicated book 1 and 2...but he employee at popular told me there is only 1 textbook for sec 2.

My girl used Book 1 this year Sec 1 and will be using Book 2 for Sec 2 next year. My girl doing FCE only half a year each.
