Without America to maintain Pax Americana, we are likely to see a situation similar to the 20-year period from the end of WW1 to the start of WW2. A beggar thy neighbor climate where countries established trade protectionist policies and competitively devalued their currencies to mutual economic detriment. Definitely not a positive development for the worldwide economy!


Ironically, Americans benefited tremendously from being the sole superpower. American dollar is the de facto world currency and the whole world happily snaps up T-bonds to fund the humongous budget deficit. Think about it, the average American’s healthcare and social security costs are largely paid for by deficit funding which is in turn funded by us through the purchase of Treasury bonds. Without the halo of being the sole superpower, no one will be willing to hold the bonds at such low rates. In fact, had any country chalked up such a level of deficit spending for so many years, it would have gone hat in hand to IMF to seek reprieve from the debtors. The story of Great Britain’s decline should be held up as a cautionary tale.

As for Singapore, as a trade-dependent island-state, our options are limited. We are trying hard to diversify our economy but it will be a long and painful process. It won’t be a breather for most, more like a constant struggle.

England is also a small dot. It can be a great nation if it leaves the UK union. I live in a part of England, which has been blighted by economic policies over that last 50 years. Inward investment and the associated job creation is much needed, to create a safe and content voting public. Theresa May's rallying cry behind the reintroduction of grammar schools is to placate the Tory Right Wingers who feel we may not have a proper Brexit. Not sure I trust her to deliver Brexit.

Singapore is a great country. You will be fine. You are an education centre of excellence, after England. You are an important shipping port and financial services hub. Plus you are located where the action is - near India and China.
Investments only come when investors are able to make money and generate a decent return from their investments. That will only happen when the particular place can offer some competitive advantage compared to the second best other place, be it lower land or labour costs, better workforce, more friendly tax or regulatory environment etc.
