<![CDATA[Secondary School Pocket Money]]>Hi,


I have a Sec 1 dd this year and I would like to have a gauge of what is the amount of allowance you are giving your kids.

Her transist link card will be top up by us so basically her allowance is for her break and lunch money.

Is $30 for 7 days enough? to take into consideration that on sat evening she might want to eat out with her church friends after service.

No idea. He tells me he spends $5.10 daily for breakfast and lunch in school. I have no reliable reference. Last yr in primary school he asks for packed food for recess so he will save the $4 I give him or buy erasers (he's one of those math question kid; he has hundreds of erasers) and then only in P6 will he dabao lunch home, from coffeeshop so that would still be about $4-5. I cannot find the pricing in school canteen. Should not vary too much too wide across schools right?

Also don't know if it's better to give him weekly/monthly or daily.
It depends on his self-discipline, I gave my daughter daily as sometimes she will spend all her pocket money on some bling bling stationery.

In primary school, I worked with them on how to do proper personal budgeting. In secondary school, they continued to choose to save, so I am quite proud of how much they’ve saved and budgeted well all these years.

P3 to P6: Upgraded to $2 per meal (i.e. recess and lunch considered as 2 meals)
Now that he is in Sec 1, I gave $3 per meal, exclusive of transport

There is always an additional $10 in his wallet (was $5 in primary school), as spare in case he feels very hungry or wish to indulge in something more expensive for the day. However, so far, the "spare" money was never used other than once, he forget to ask me for additional money for donation to TOUCH organised by his school. So he just use that spare money.

That is lunch. Recess is a plate or 2 plates of rice too. 😓

How much pocket money to you plan to give/did you give per week for Sec 1, excluding public transport?

I change 1 stack of $2, $5, $10 and kids help themselves. They normally take around $10 then any excess roll over to next day usage, top up again anytime when fund is low. I don't monitor. All based on trust.
They don't save their pocket money because it is not daily allowance and excess is for next day not their savings. Different system from most I guess

Come P6, dd1 complained that she went hungry easier and $2 was no longer enough. So I will be giving her a dollar more every day next year.


If DD1 goes back to her affiliated secondary school, it will be the same old canteen and I won’t be giving more than $3 for her secondary one recess. If need to stay back after school, that would be another $3 more (excl transport).

It sounds a bit steep? But boys probably eat a lot. Does it include drinks? You may want to encourage water instead. MRT fare is a bit higher that that, but not much - 50-60cents, I think, and it's distance-related (but only 2 tiers).
