One that I vividly remember was during my grandma’s wake. We were all staying over at our uncle’s place as grandma’s wake was held there. We took turns to stay up and when I went up to catch some zzzs I was struck with sleep paralysis. Thing was I was wide awake but could not move or breathe. Think it lasted about a few seconds only but it felt really long. Uncles and aunties said 鬼压身 but I know it is stress from grief.

It doesn't happen everyday but occasionally. Its a feeling of semi consciousness which you know you want to wake up from but which you can't. As if something is pressing on you and you have to muster enough strength to jolt yourself awake. I used to tell DH that 鬼压我 until I finally found the medical term for it.

Few days ago I experienced it again. It was more frightening this time round cos in my semi consciousness I felt that I was not breathing and I was desperately trying to wake up so that I could breath. It became more and more suffocating to such a point that i jolted myself up from my sleep.

In scientific terms I think this is called apnoea. Not a good experience when sleep paralysis meets sleep apnoea.

If you didn't see any human silhouette, or hear anyone breathing or mumbling next to you, then it's simply 'sleep paralysis' or 'apnoea', not a demonic attack. :nailbite:

You should reconfigure your bedroom by removing certain furniture like dressing tables / wardrobes with large mirrors, unnecessary electronic devices, potted plants or misleading paintings. Most importantly, adjust your bed position. Worse comes to worst, you may need to swop bedrooms with your dc.

You can buy pure essential oils that aid sleep, tempur pillows, posturpedic mattress, etc. Repaint your bedroom walls, change the intensity of your bedroom lighting, or change your bedsheets to another colour.

The position of your bed is very important. I once leased an overseas house with a master bedroom that faced the window. I took the bedside facing the bathroom door which had some reflective elements like full glass panels and mirrors. I couldn't sleep well all the time. In my subconscious, I could see dark shadows and movements flickering. I woke up a few times in the middle of the night screaming. It was because I kept seeing shadows of leaves and branches of trees outside my window trembling against my wall. I'm severely myopic you see, so I couldn't tell what the objects were when I was drifting in and out of consciousness. Same with the bathroom mirror. Sometimes it could be because my hubby had entered our room after I'd fallen asleep, but in my dreamy state, I saw a fast moving shadow reflected on the bathroom shower glass panel instead. That's why it's important to shut your ensuite bathroom door if you're not using it. We also covered the bedroom plasma tv with a large towel when it was not in use!

I also refrained from using lacquer/glossy laminate for my bedroom wardrobes and study room cabinets. Zero paintings in my bedroom since my night vision is quite poor.

https://s8.postimg.org/uhl841plx/fengshuinightmares.jpg\">

jetsetter

Reply to numb at night on Sun, 26 Mar 2017 23:36:03 GMT

ImMeeMee:
Not sure if my hands were on my chest at that point. Besides shifting your sleeping position, I suggest making sure the room is not too hot or stuffy. Ventilate the room well during the day and see if that helps. I am quite sensitive to oxygen levels and sometimes I get this I-cannot-breath feeling even during the day and have to leave a room. I even feedbacked to LTA on the ventilation of their trains when I found myself having to step out of the train twice during a journey just to get some air.

ammonite

Reply to numb at night on Sun, 26 Mar 2017 14:23:32 GMT

ImMeeMee:

What happens if your DH grabs your hand instead of slapping your arm?

He said i started to scream louder....So slapping repeatedly is the most effective.

jedamum

Reply to numb at night on Sun, 26 Mar 2017 13:19:09 GMT

starlight1968sg:
Sleep apnea is associated with loud snoring?

Sleep apnoea is the momentary stopping of the breath during sleep due to the narrowing of the airway, and manifests itself as snoring. That is pretty much in a nutshell though you would be able to find more through google.

It seems this is quite a common condition, just that some are milder than the rest. It goes away when you change your sleep posture. But it may come back on other days.

As for sleep apnea, I haven't consulted a doctor on this but DH has done his sleep test and has been using a machine to regulate his air flow to cut down sleep apnea. Having a mask on the face isnt the easiest thing to sleep with, but I must salute DH for being persistent in this. Until recently he finds that his sleep quality is dropping again, even with the mask. I think the technological advancements to manage sleep apnea are not that optimal yet. Unless one opts for surgery which has its risks.

ImMeeMee

Reply to numb at night on Sun, 26 Mar 2017 08:58:41 GMT

ImMeeMee:
I have been having sleep paralysis since quite long ago.
