They have ways so different from the kids before, not just in the context of study. They have their own way of doing things.

Perhaps, you can just let them study in ways they want. Let them explore their uniqueness and give them enough space to be innovative. But, parents should still be observant. Like you still need to check if he is really productive with his study. Check on his grades as well. If everything doing well then that affirms that his studying technique is good for him. If not, you can talk to him and possibly coach him to improve his studies.

It made me feel productive that way. My brother also does the same, his genre are usually metal/hard rock.

There was also a study done at our school during the days, the experimenter played several music genre (i think 5) and made the students study then answered a questionnaire, I just didn’t know the result if it is significant. But I think its the person who studies who can determine the music genre he/she is most effective while listening to it.

I used to believe that one can never concentrate on their homework if they are listening to music at the same time. I tried to teach my children this too and constantly nag at them . However, as times goes, it seems that it is common for today’s children to do that. They feel not too stress while listening to music and doing homework. So gradually, I let this go as long as they do their homework and bring in good grades. Guess it is just different generation.

If the homework is practise related (simply copying and pasting, or maths problems with which they are very familiar with by now - just practising speed), listening to music is fine. However, if they are required to go through a certain thought process (diffused mode of thinking), the music can be very disruptive.

It would be better for the child to learn to focus on his/her work without any aids (music, treats etc). Homework should be done, as much as possible under examination like conditions. If you only got 1 hour for this section, get it done in that hour. You can do whatever you want after but not during homework time.

This trains their grit and the delay in gratification has been proven to be useful for children's development.

meinteel

Reply to Listening to music while doing homework? on Mon, 20 Nov 2017 08:43:16 GMT

I do that too.
