CMA's (abacus) coverage is very narrow. It is only about arithmetic but Math is more than just arithmetic. CMA does not cover Time, Money, Graphs, Mass, Volume etc.... which are topics that primary school students need to learn in school too. I know Math Monkey does cover these topics besides arithmetic. Personally, I would rather my son get learn all the math topics than just arithmetic.....

Rabbit02

Reply to Math Monkey - Discussion on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 14:57:37 GMT

I put my boy in Math Monkey for about 3 months already, and he absolutely love it…So, I am continuing him for another term.

Like you, I asked about the teachers too and they said that they have a set of curriculum/teaching instructions that teachers must follow so I guess "no suka suka wishy washy teaching" allowed. In that sense, maybe not so "teacher dependent".

My boy can’t do worksheet style coz he is a pretty active boy and worksheets drilling is too boring for him. Kumon is completely out for him and MPM, even though they are have more pictures compared to the boring Kumon, they are still very much worksheet based. To me, MPM and Kumon are not that different. There is not much learning in these type of centres.

He likes Math Monkey because the lessons are very interactive and the games (which I understand is actually math practice sessions) can help generate his interest in math. I think an interest in Math is very important in order for a child to get good results in maths. Since enrolling him in math monkey, he is more willing to do his math homework. And I don’t have to nag at him so much too…makes me a happier mummy…

My 4.5 year old went for the open house trial cum assessment on 12 Nov and enjoyed it very much. Til today still keep asking me why I did not sign her up. I only sat in for around 15mins of the lesson b4 parents are invited to another room to view a presentation of their programme. Throughout this 15mins, there is alot of interaction btw the teacher and kids and they are very eagar to participate in the activities and answer the questions teacher asked. No hard-selling at the end of the trial, they just ask you which timeslot you prefer and will notify you if there is any available class.
