Because if is a 3-marks qn, that's a lot !<br /><br />Suppose there are two P6  students at PSLE : X and Y<br /><br />Supose a student, X, had scored 89 marks (before reaching / attempting this ribbon qn)  if this student X managed to get this ribbon qn correct, after analysis &amp; working :-<br />Add back another 2 marks : Total, how much he get now ?<br /><br />89+ 2 = 91, hit A* <br /><br />So, student X scored A* (91 or higher), for Maths <br /><br /><br />But, suppose another student Y (also with 89 marks, initially)  attempted same ribbon qn, but did not manage to get it correct, end up final score still 89+ Zero = 89<br /><br />So, student Y scored A (89), not A *<br /><br />Qn <br />Does this 2-mark PSLE ribbon qn set, help to differentiate students from a pool, to score A * vs A ?<br /><br />Not really, but it can still determine the student's final grade, eventually. <br /><br />How ? <br /><br />Without ribbon qn present, initially -<br />both students X and Y would have ended up the same, at 89 marks. A star calibre gets an answer and know WHAT E NUMBER MEANS. But A calibre likely to be able to manipulate numbers based on what they have learnt  n might not know what e number means thought they managed to get an answer.  <br /><br />From ext year e format has change n nn instead of kca,  qn’s r based on authencity levels. Like it or not, expect more of this. For me I like it cos it makes number’s real n thus relevant in life.<br /><br />Imagine…a man goes to a shop to buy A4 paper:<br /><br />Man: uncle A4 paper 1 pack.<br />Uncle: nah ( passed him 2packs of A5 pack cos he happened to have more stock of A5 paper n willing to charge 2 A5 for lesser than 1 A4)<br />Man: uncle I want A4.<br />Uncle: 2 A5 pack n 1 A4 pack same what. Means u dunno if u join 2 A5 can get A4? Some more cheaper.<br />Man: but I want A4!<br />Uncle: nah I give u sticky tape free u go home join.<br />Man: but I need whole piece A4 cost I using for printer to print document!<br />Uncle: say early lah! Next time be clear of what u want then we don’t waste each other time. <br />Uncle: take out a pack of A4 paper finally.<br /><br />Is e man being ambiguous of what he wants or e uncle being unreasonable?  <br />U be e judge.</p>

Ppl who say join ribbon, if u want to buy 5 pcs of 100cm ribbon n e last piece is join w glue using 40n60cm…will u accept e reason being we ran out of full 100cm. N if can join then might as well slice along e run to half or even thirds then u get triple e quantity without compromising on length. <br /><br />If ur boss ask u to organise a party n needed 200 ribbons to tie this is exactly how u need to calculate n get full 110cm length. Will u  go buy loose small pcs n join n tell ur boss is creativity?. Boundaries allows thinking to be stretched. If forces u to think what u can do. This is a good question.  If students think logically they should get it. Go ask ur kids how long is a school bus or how much water is in a swimming pool u will be surprise most of them do not have any sense what meter n cubic meter means though they do it all e time. Time to learn that numbers r real n in thus qns, e number’s e authentic n real.</p>

As if anyone will ever say, I have 3 times more money than you now after you gave me $50. How much did I have originally.  I think if the kids know that in a math question, they are expected to calculate how many strips can be cut from one 25m roll and therefore how many rolls they will need to cut x number of strips, then the answer is really not controversial, no?  We may not like the question, and it may disturb our thrifty attitudes but it doesn’t make it a bad question.</p>

However, the ribbons were sold at 25 m per tape. Go and buy the tapes.”<br />Son: “Mother, can I buy the type which can be joined so that I can join them in case the length of one piece is less than 110cm?”<br />Mother: “You are not allowed to ask question. Use your real life experience and creativity to make the decision.”<br /><br />Son finally bought 9 tapes of ribbon.<br /><br />Mother: “Wrong. I will punish you by cancelling the party.”</p>

We should teach our next generation to be able to think in order to save monies and environment. Extra roll of 24m to use up only 0.09% is a waste (can’t remember the exact figure). How can we educate our kids to waste the resources?</p>
