I sometimes "envy" my wife who is Cantonese and grew up speaking both Hokkien and Canto. It’s easier to use in Singapore and to useful when watching drama too.

For my children, it would be English. In fact, we hardly speak Cantonese or Hokkien, so my son is quite blur when he gets to Army. I don’t know if he understands it at all, although given the fact that he gets exposed to it all the time, I think the language is legible to him. Its probably like my exposure to K-drama and Jap serials. I can tell the difference and understand simple terms like Kumsamida but nothing beyond that. As I learnt Japanese before, I can probably read the language without understanding what I read. For Korean it seems to be much harder. But I can watch k-dramas… subtitled. Lol.
