It asks candidates to describe what the video talks about in clear sequence, and give their own views and feelings based on the video content.

Candidates will have 5 minutes to prepare before the exam, for short essay reading and video description. Candidates should spend 3 minutes on video description. In this precious 3 minutes, they should observe the video carefully, and take note of the following:

1. Time, Place And Figures
2. Divide Figures Into Groups Relative To Each Other
3. Order These Groups In Certain Sequence
4. Find Out Figures That Need To Pay Attention On, Especially Those With Bad Or Good Actions

When describing the video, you need to follow the format :

1. Opening (这段视频描述的是...)

2. Description Sequence
Make sure you describe with accurate words and never give names to the figures in the video, for example:
'那个扎着马尾的女生' is better than 那个女生'
'一个戴着眼镜、背着书包的男同学' is better than '一个男生'

3. Views And Feelings (我生气/担心...) (我认为他们不应该...而是应该...)
Besides describe the video in sequence, candidates are also required to talk about their views and feelings based on the video content. When candidates describe the video, they will mention some bad behaviors and good behaviors which we can talk about. Without views and feelings, it will not be a complete video description.

4. Advice And Suggestions
Besides views and feelings, candidates who want to achieve full marks can try to give their own suggestions, which are the solutions to those special behaviors.

5. Ending (总的来说...)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other Things To Take Note Of :

1. DO NOT make up a story, only describe the content of the picture.
2. Must speak in sequence and order.
3. DO NOT name the figures in the video.
4. Key figures should have detailed description, like the clothes, hairs, etc. For example,
'戴着眼镜的女士...', '扎着马尾的女孩子...', '穿着衬衫、打着领带的中年男士...'.
5. DO NOT forget the scene, for example, the buildings, woods, flowers, indicator and tables.
6. Conclusion is necessary.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://tuitionchinese.sg

TeacherWang

Reply to How To Teach Your Child Good Pronunciation Through Pinyin? on Fri, 03 Nov 2017 03:27:44 GMT

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How Do We Get Children To Enjoy Learning Chinese?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The idea that the Chinese language is difficult to learn has been deeply held by many children. Students were interviewed on television frankly stating, \"I hate Chinese\". Many other attest to that, saying that a lot of time is spent memorising the phrases. The Education ministry is racking their brains to find a good solution for this issue, constantly adjusting their policies. The level of difficulty has also been lowered to better match with the student's ability, especially those who come from an English-speaking background. Despite the continuous adjustments, the complaints that Chinese is difficult to learn still do not stop. So how do you make kids enjoy learning Chinese?

First Of All, We Must Be To Attract The Child's Attention And Enthusiasm.
It is easy to make people feel frustrated when learning Chinese, so I would make sure that when I teach, I would constantly encourage and guide them. Even if some children do not like Chinese, I would not scold them, instead would inspire them to love Chinese. When teaching, I will adjust the teaching to match their ability. At the same time I would gradually increase the difficulty, from listening, to speaking, to reading and writing.

We should understand that most children do not hate Chinese, instead they simply are not interested in it. As many of the children's knowledge is acquired in English, they do not know how to express it in Mandarin due to their limited vocabulary. This makes speaking Chinese more of a hassle. Parents can help by incorporating Chinese into their children's daily life, so that their children would learn Chinese whilst growing up. This would improve their standard and also make it easier for children to learn and express in Chinese.

Secondly, In Addition To Completing The Content, Aim To Get The Students More Interested In Chinese Through Things They Are Interested In As Well.
Over the years, I have taught Chinese with the idea that it should be a fun experience. To do so, I would adjust the content to better suit the child's interest, as well as relating it to their daily life. The approach I used is through song, riddles, tongue twisters, and other fun means. These methods are inherently very interesting and enjoyable, making it easy to arouse students' interest in Chinese. Understanding a child's interests and relatable themes, makes it easier for them to learn a new language. They are likely to care and listen when it is something that they like, and from there they would naturally pick up the language.

Lastly, The Establishment Of Incentives.
The carrot-and-stick approach is very important in learning, and we must not underestimate a short sentence like \"you are great!\", In fact, rewards need not come with a large price tag, a simple praise, or an applause of the action can greatly motivate the child to improve himself further. Students who received encouragements will more likely remember the knowledge they had gained, and from there, find it easier and more fun to learn Chinese.

http://tuitionchinese.sg/images/enjoy-learning-chinese.jpg\">

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://tuitionchinese.sg

TeacherWang

Reply to How To Teach Your Child Good Pronunciation Through Pinyin? on Fri, 06 Oct 2017 09:18:59 GMT

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How To Build A Strong Chinese Foundation In Primary 1 And 2?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is no exam in primary 1 and 2 in Singapore, the study environment is very free and easy. The Singapore Ministry of Education try to help students fit into school life in this way. However, the relaxing environment will cause them to slack off, and think school life is not intense. It is harmful in developing good learning habits, which cause potential harm for higher grades study.

In order to prevent such situations from happening, I will talk about how to build a strong Chinese foundation in Primary 1 and 2. So the students can enjoy the school life, while catch up with their study and prepare for future study. Since the school focus on oral interactive ability in primary 1 and 2 Chinese study, and neglect the writing and reading sides, therefore I will introduce more on the development of reading and writing abilities.

1. Build Strong Chinese Pinyin Foundation
Pinyin is the key in learning Chinese and strong foundation should be built from a young age. By the end of Primary 1 and 2 study, students should be able to:

Spell and pronounce pinyin correctly and fluently.
Write down pinyin correctly and fast when hearing it.
The second one is very important in the PSLE essay exam, because the candidate are allowed to use electronic dictionary, which can search words with pinyin. The training of pinyin can be done with listening and writing pinyin, reading and pronouncing pinyin again and again. Must be able to read and write.

2. Know The Stroke Sequence, Number, And Structure Of Each Word
Stoke sequence and number can train word structure and ensure students' writing speed and aesthetics. Such training can avoid wrong words caused by mistakes of stroke number and word structure and thus lose marks in exam. If build strong foundation in lower grades, a lot of trouble can be avoided in the future.

Since the training in school is not enough and unscientific, students should undergo more training. They can use matts writing papers which give better effect.

3. Know Common Words : Quantifier, Modal Particle, 的, 地, 得 etc
Students make mistakes on quantifier easily, especially in the reading the pictures in oral exam and writing essays. When they speak or write, it is hard for students to use correct quantifier. Thus, we should teach them to use it correctly since they are young.

Modal particle help students to differentiate tones and is helpful in oral exam and comprehension questions.

By knowing 的, 地, 得 well, students can avoid grammar errors in open questions such as writing essays, making up sentences and comprehension questions.

These grammar knowledge is very basic and exaggerate, and only can be digested and apply them well by practicing at a young age, it will be harder if students only start to learn in higher grades.

4. Know Basic Sentence Structures : Active Sentence, Passive Sentence, Existential Sentence
These three sentence structures are only for Chinese and are the most common ones. At the same time, they are the sentence structures that students will make mistakes on most often. These sentences not only can be applied widely in oral exam, but also appear in making up sentences, comprehension questions and writing essays. Similar to exaggerate words, sentence structures should be practiced again and again, so to be digested well. The younger, the easier. Therefore, primary 1 and 2 are the key periods learning these sentence structures.

http://tuitionchinese.sg

TeacherWang

Reply to How To Teach Your Child Good Pronunciation Through Pinyin? on Fri, 06 Oct 2017 09:17:59 GMT

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How To Improve Your Chinese?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is actually not very difficult to learn Mandarin. Through years of teaching experience, I have summarized the following key points:

1. A Lot Of Reading
How To Improve Your Chinese?
Reading is one of the basic skills to cultivate children's Chinese literacy. It can even be said that reading is the foundation of Chinese learning and is an irreplaceable means in improving the Chinese proficiency of children. Children who read more tend to accumulate more vocabulary, material, and emotions. Such foundation will make writing essays easier in time to come.

I will recommend reading material to children based on their age. For instance, I recommend children in lower grade to read fairy tales or fables, while those in higher grade can read more varied genres, such as children's literature, essays, newspapers and magazines, or even science fiction and comics. Children should be allowed to choose their reading material based on their interests and needs, and gain what they need through these books.

2. Recite Classics
Reciting classic articles is also one of the basic skills to cultivate children's Chinese culture. Recital is an inevitable part of learning Chinese. However, this is also the part that students hate. I would like to emphasize that recitation is an indispensable part of learning Chinese. If the prime time of a child's memory is before the age of 16, then he should recite a large amount of Chinese classic to lay solid foundation for the Chinese language.

3. Develop A Habit Of Writing Diaries
Diaries can cultivate children's observation skills and ability to think, as well as Chinese expressions. Children can develop such a habit incrementally. They can start by writing shorter entries, and increase in length and frequency incrementally. Children should also be encouraged to write diaries of any contents – they can be imaginative or based on real experiences, about domestic issues or international developments.

4. Let Children Write In Their Own language
Parents should allow them to write what they want and think without restrictions. Children should be encouraged to use short sentences, plain expressions and concrete examples. Children should also refrain from using sweeping statements, and use more expressive language.

5. Accumulation Bit By Bit
Learning Chinese is a long process of accumulation. It cannot be done overnight, and requires accumulation of knowledge. I will advise my students to prepare a notebook in which they can jot down words that they do not know, and they can check their meaning when they have time. Over time, they will be able to build up a foundation and strong Chinese vocabulary.

http://tuitionchinese.sg

TeacherWang
