He is in P2 now. I spoke with his form teacher. She recommended on top of 1 to 1 tution, I need to buy extra sets of Maths workbooks. She said what kids do in school, get them to do it at home with the tutor. I spoke to ds's tutor. She agreed with what the form teacher said. I also made a terrible mistake of not following up on ds tuition or school work. *outsourcing* everything to his ex-tutor  . I've seen parents who never believe in enrichment and yet the child top the level. So it really depends on what your beliefs are and what you are trying to achieve.

For me, I choose to be KS and i believe with the proper classes and family support, she can do so much more. There is no right and wrong answer.

MMM

Reply to Follow up with child's work after tuition / enrichment class on Mon, 15 Mar 2010 08:21:52 GMT

I see you stressed out mom coaching the kids and I’m getting scared. Many under-achieving kids in languages are lacking in practice in spelling and it is really impossible to expect tutors to suddenly turn them into good spellers within that 1.5-2 hrs/week sessions without neglecting other core skills.

I've been sending my child for enrichment classes and each time I will make effort to go through the worksheets and let them know the errors that they made esp so for her piano though I have zero background. I've been doing that consistently for my elder girl but not my boy. I decided I need to do likewise for him though it's extremely tiring to juggle 2. But for the benefit of the knowledge and understanding gained, it's worth sparing the time, however fatigue u are.

Being a freelance teacher myself, I always remind the parents to reinforce the practice at home. Meeting once a week and expecting the child to grasp the concepts fully is simply not possible, esp when child is in a group setting where the teacher's time is divided among all the kids. :celebrate:

luvmum

Reply to Follow up with child's work after tuition / enrichment class on Sat, 13 Mar 2010 02:38:39 GMT

i am very sure cant depend on tuition alone. if tuition its only once a wk e.g chinese, and u dun revise or go thru with them at home, they may hv forgotten what they have learnt, with blur blur mind they go for the next lesson and all the problem will build up. Its very sad alot of parents send their kids to ex tuition cls and thought their kids shd be in gd hands. There maybe some exception if the kids themselves are v self-motivated.

I would say their results were terrible. Her parents just spending time watching cantonese shows in the past.

So, this has been silently cultivate their interest in cantonese shows without interest in reading.
