Hope I can keep it up for this one album. :faint:

Which is why I would suggest that you work with an asset management software like Photos for Mac or Adobe Bridge.

Let's say you have photos from different sources of the same event - e.g. birthday party, a holiday in Paris... I want to put all of them in a simple folder structure, e.g. 2018 > March.

1. I would select all the photos from Source A and look at the date / time captured in the metadata. If you have synchronised your cameras before the start of the event (like army operation ), you should have the same date / time stamp. Unfortunately, while the smart phones are able to auto correct the date / time (even after you moved into a different time zone), the P&S or DSLR cameras may not. Fret not, select all those wrong date / time and batch edit with the right date / time. Typically, you only need to edit one picture with the right date / time in a batch and the software will auto adjust the date / time for the rest of the photos with reference to this one.

2. Next, I would look at the location data of the images. Most mobile phones would have location info in the photo metadata but some of the photos take from the P&S or DSLR cameras may not. You can do a batch edit to include the right GPS data for photos without the location data (don't worry about accuracy at this point - as long as all your Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, etc are pointing to Paris, that's fine).

3. After that, select all the photos and give them keywords like \"Birthday\", \"Holiday\" or \"Tunisia\" that capture the overall idea of the photos.

Dump the photos into the folder (2018 > March) and repeat with the next source. It's only a simple 3-step process but you will have a basic library up and running

There is no need to worry about file naming nomenclature, or even folder structure. All of the photos, regardless of the source, are linked to the event by date / time, location data and keywords. If you need to find the photos, a quick search (even within Windows Search or MacOS Finder) will reveal them in less than a minute. Even if the photos are all mixed up, you can easily do a quick sort by date / time or location.

If you have more time (or got nothing else to do ), you can further refine the library by selecting groups of photos and giving them keywords like \"Aeroplane\", \"Food\", \"Dessert\", \"Boy\", \"Tiger\", \"Eaten Alive\", etc. You can also select groups of photos and providing them with the right GPS location (especially if you can't tahan photos of Eiffel Tower floating on the River Seine\" or even attribute the photos to the right camera man.

Thank you!! Modern software is here to help fill in some of these gaps. As I mentioned earlier, after my 2-week vacation to NZ, I only had about 200 photos. I prune quite hard and don't keep very similar photos. I rarely take photos of food unless it's something very unusual and cultural. I usually ask myself - will I care about this by next year? in 10 yrs time? Then I delete. I find it a chore to have to look at many photos of the same thing from different angles, so I don't take such photos, or if I do, I'll just keep 1 or 2.

I transfer my photos to my computer asap and get vacations photos labelled and stored within a week of return. Any longer than that, the momentum gets lost. When travelling, one of the family will bring a computer along, and I will backup on the computer, and do some pruning along the way.

All my photos are in a single folder (with subfolders), so I just copy the big folder over. I use a very simple system:
1) Each year's photos in a folder, eg. 2001, 2002...
2) Each photo labelled: eg. 03_SIN001_xxx; 03_SIN002_xxx; 03_MAL001_x...
(ie. March_Singapore no.1_xxx, March_Malaysia no.1_xxx etc)
3) If there are a lot of photos of a particular event, eg. a vacation, I may put them in subfolder within that year's folder.

The main thing that's important to me is to make sure that the photos will line themselves up in chronological order on my computer, so the month always comes first in the filename. Then I order them by using numbers. If I want to insert photos into the sequence later on, I add a letter, eg. 03_SIN001a_description. The problem is when we can't remember when something happened, or which year we took a particular photo. But we can mostly remember the time to the nearest year or month.

The hard part is retrospectively scanning the thousands of photos, and being disciplined to prune and file new photos before they get too many and overwhelming.

Digital photos are easy to sort chronologically. All digital photos are already time-stamped. Just Sort by Date or check 'Details', you get all the Meta-Data. Highlight whole chunk according to Date, and Batch Rename your files, all get the same prefixes or suffixes in any convention you set.

It's the old photos that I scanned that are not in a chronological order, as many were pasted artistically on scrapbooks, or inserted into old-school albums unlabeled. I had a hard time recalling the names of some attractions!

Zeit

Reply to Restoring old photographs on Fri, 23 Mar 2018 00:36:38 GMT

sean wife:
Ammonite/slmkhoo,

For me, photos are also just for memories’ sake. My kids didn't take much interest in photos till they were older, to remind themselves of things in their past. My husband and I only occasionally look at the photos, but it's just nice to know they are available. And maybe when we're much older...

Earlier this year, I collected and scanned a series of my parents' old photos and made a slideshow for my father's 80th birthday. They really loved it, and the grandchildren did too! My mother has asked me to set some of the photos to accompany a favourite song of theirs, and I'm going to give them the video of it for their anniversary next week. And for my IT-averse mum, I plan to make a photobook of the photos for her. Of course, in their day, photos were much fewer. In fact, I only have 1 photo each of them as children (in those b&w posed family groups); the other photos they have begin during their university days (also b&w).

sharonkhoo

Reply to Restoring old photographs on Fri, 23 Mar 2018 00:04:26 GMT

Ammonite/slmkhoo,

For me, photos are also just for memories’ sake.
