The SMRT staff who has worked in SMRT for over 15 years said that employees are angry that military cronies are taking over senior management roles:

“Desmond Kuek had angered many employees when he roped in former military officials who were equally newbies in running a rail company to take on senior management positions. If it had already been proven that a former chief of defence force had failed in the task, it will be a Herculean task for another chief of defence force to restore the faith of all corners. The staff’s concern is what this new CEO has on his mind right now – more of the same?”

Another SMRT employee States Times Review (STR) spoke to said that morale is very low at the moment, and the company had to increase wages to keep employees, especially those with over a decade of experience, in the company. Earlier in February 2018, SMRT raised wages for all technicians to appease happiness over poor profit-sharing in the company. In 2016, SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek took home S$1.8 million in annual salaries.

Another SMRT employee also told STR that he has little faith rail reliability will improve under the new CEO who knows next to nothing about railway engineering. The employee expressed disappointment at the choice of the new CEO, commented on the military background of Neo Kian Hong as “cannot make it like Desmond Kuek”, and referred to the appointment as a form of corruption.

http://statestimesreview.com/2018/04/19/smrt-staff-we-are-angry-military-officials-taking-senior-management-roles/

Saplings

Reply to SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek to step down on Thu, 19 Apr 2018 14:14:26 GMT

starlight1968sg:
There is no mention where is he going after stepping down

he will be put somewhere...just don't know which unfortunate company it will be.

janet88

Reply to SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek to step down on Thu, 19 Apr 2018 07:36:51 GMT

https://imgur.com/KO2Dybt.png\">

https://www.prolificskins.com/forum/current-affairs/new-smrt-logo-what-do-you-think

areyoustressed

Reply to SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek to step down on Thu, 19 Apr 2018 07:33:29 GMT

pirate:
Cultural issue? Looks familiar. When did I last saw it? Oh yeah. In the SAF. I think it is going to be more of the same.

Stop blaming Saw. She was appointed by the board of directors to monetize the retail properties in MRT stations. She did exactly that. Blame the board of directors.

Saw, it has been said that if you are a shareholder during her tenure, you would be extremely happy (must be a perfect score during her appraisal). It should be noted that between 2002 and 2012 (i.e. her tenure), about 20% of annual operating profit was disbursed to shareholders as dividends. She's just the fall guy (or woman). The culpable ones are still happily sitting around the round table.

BTW Saw is the first non-SAF related CEO. Before her, the CEO was BG Boey Tak Hap - a former COA, and before Boey, Rdm Kwek Siew Jin - a former CON Kwek famously announced in 1997 an upgrade to the NSL and EWL, which never materialize and that leads to the problem we are facing today. Saw probably have never even stepped foot on a SMRT train between 1997 and 2002 as she was still happily doing duty free shopping.

I am quite sure that if they keep throwing CDF (2), COA (1), CON (1) or CAF (0... RSAF needs to catch up) at SMRT, by the law of probability, some day, some one is going to get lucky and get it right. I won't be holding my breath though.

floppy
