He is a foreigner visiting his father in Singapore. I don’t really blame the mum because she is new to our country and the busy roads. If he had fallen but escape harm, she would have had cold sweat and gone back home reminding all her friends and family to be vigilant at our roads.

Even if she was local, I feel it is very wrong to attribute this to race. I see other races and nationalities doing the same thing. It can be ignorance, complacency, negligence or sheer fatigue. Regardless, it is something that nobody wants and there is no need to rub salt into wounds. I am very ashamed of the racist remarks I have read online. If we “know better”, is it not because of our more privileged position in terms of education, upbringing, traffic safety messages drummed in over the years in school and over public media, the highlighting of such accidents to us over the years etc? Can we really say that without all these, we would not have done the same? But since the accident, I have noticed increased vigilance among caregivers.

I would like to take the chance to highlight another factor in road safety. Some heavy vehicles need a longer braking distance, and in some cases, the vehicles are in poor condition with barely functional brakes. A family member was just involved in a car accident a few weeks ago, fortunately only the car was damaged. The accident happened because the truck’s brakes and steering were faulty. This was not totally the driver’s fault, but the company’s fault for stinging on maintenance and renewal of vehicles. So do make sure that there is enough distance between you and a moving heavy vehicle when crossing the roads.

ammonite

Reply to 7-year-old boy 'seriously injured' in CCK bus accident on Sat, 26 May 2018 02:31:30 GMT

janet88:
it is a tragedy indeed. just that split second when the mum was attending to something when the boy dashed out.

this is why we cannot trust young kids when they get down from the car or at any place....we never know what they will do.

Attending to something or bo chap? si bei jia lat! abnn and its roti prata!

private

Reply to 7-year-old boy 'seriously injured' in CCK bus accident on Sat, 26 May 2018 02:29:24 GMT

I see.
