The poster says they surveyed parents whose kids are in university level and below - that could include a lot of older kids. It would be more useful to break the students into age groups - 6-12 yrs, 13-18 yrs, 19+ yrs. I would expect that while some HBL would be appreciated for older kids, most parents would want pr school kids to be mostly/entirely in school. And if the families that were surveyed included more with home environments conducive for studying and better IT facilities, they might favour more HBL than lower-income families.

Yes, the table would be been more meaningful, if the data had been differentiated based on age groups.

For JC or university students, online learning is a godsend as they save on travelling time and are already savvy with the software required for video conferencing. Added bonus would be pretending to listen boring lectures while doing something else like gaming or reading. Anyway, most of the syllabus and technical skills can be self-studied.

For students below the age of 16, online classes are flat out ineffective. The students will also be missing out on the soft aspect of learning such as the building up of social skills, communication skills, discipline, and self-motivation. Once we miss out on that development window, it can be difficult to catch up.

tinker_bell

Reply to Experiences with Home Based Learning on Tue, 09 Nov 2021 06:41:22 GMT

ChiefKiasu\" post_id=\"2045419\" time=\"1636358252\" user_id=\"3:

Thank you for the chart. Most people would prefer a mix of online vs offline. I think the online experience is best supported by having AI teachers, so people can really learn at their own pace. Having teachers do the online learning as-is will not work in the long term. The only way is to move the online learning to VR to simulate a classroom environment, but that is another story.

ChiefKiasu

Reply to Experiences with Home Based Learning on Tue, 09 Nov 2021 00:59:19 GMT

tinker_bell\" post_id=\"2045415\" time=\"1636356240\" user_id=\"194652:

https://preview.redd.it/22hz15kff6y71.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=00085a88e3a29f0cf09a850d50146e5f3487b0d3\">

Do more than half of parents with school-going children really want some form of HBL even after the pandemic is over?

Doesn't seem to gel with the experiences myself and my friends had with HBL.

It really depends on who they surveyed and the nos. in different age groups.
