I have also engaged a tutor for them for the past 2 years who comes weekly to teach them the language. I however have my reservations about this. Since we do not speak the language at home, and the standard is quite high, especially in upper primary and secondary, I am not too sure if they can really cope with it. So I am keeping my options open. They have been going to Hindi classes at DAV since last year (K1). So far so good....They still can't speak the language but since it's not a big deal for me (as I am very fluent with the language) I think I can take the chance with the language (this is a big plus for me as I can help them with Hindi as against Mandarin where I know zero).

The school they will be going to next year does not have Hindi Language option yet. I am still hopeful that if there are more students then I can convince the school to let them do the classes in school itself, otherwise they will join the other children for the Mandarin lessons and then go to the Hindi classes on Saturdays.

Btw, are you sure that DAV will send a Hindi teacher even if there is just one child? When I went two years back to DAV to enquire about K1, I was told they need min 4 children to start parallel sessions in a school.

Vividlaurel

reddotresident:
Hi Vividlaurel / Chixchix

Can you share your experiences pls? I have kid who is currently learning Mandarin at school and other who learns Hindi.

Chixchix, Hindi Society or DAV will arrange to teach hindi during their mother tongue time in school. They will send a teacher , even for just one students ( the fee varies). You will have to contact them and they will coordinate with whichever school you enrol your kid in.The school is usually very accomodating of such requests.

Reply to Non-Tamil Indian Languages (NTIL) on Wed, 08 Jun 2016 03:27:39 GMT

Giving away Hindi Books

If anyone wants Secondary school Hindi Books ( sec1 to A level), pls pm me .

If yes, then, imho, there is no need for your son to attend Hindi lessons.

If you can speak Hindi, do start talking to him now. Learning language through immersion is, imho, the best method at this young age. Children's brains are like sponges at this age; they will soak up all the langage that you expose them to. I have read somewhere that the child should be spoken to in the target language atleast 20% of the time (approx 2 days a week at a minimum.)

Assuming you can read Hindi, you can buy picture story books in Hindi and read to him daily. Imho, reading to a child is the second best way to teach him a language (the best way is to speak to him regularly.) There are several sites where Hindi stories are available. Offhand I can only recall 'Arvind Gupta Toys' - pls google it. The site owner has translated several award-winning children's books into Hindi. However, these have basic black-and-white pictures. If you son prefers colour, it would be better to buy books from India.

For writing, you can introduce the Devanagari script at the age of 4.5-5 - first the swar (vowels) and then the vyanjan (consonants). For introducing the concept of barakhadi (syllables) I think 5.5-6 is the optimal age.

Around ages 5-6, if your son's fine motor skills are still developing and he is unable to write well with a pencil, you can buy a small slate or blackboard and get him to write the letters with chalk. Or you can spread out some rava/sooji (semolina) onto a large, flat surface that is dark gray in colour (such as a non-stick coated cookie baking tray) and have your son write the letters in it.

For practice/drill, you can also buy the big wall chart of Devanagari letters. Or you can make/print flashcards with the letters and have him say the sound each card makes.

Hope that helps. Do post back if you need more info.

nansk

Reply to Non-Tamil Indian Languages (NTIL) on Wed, 20 Apr 2011 09:04:01 GMT

hey all

i know the last post was quite some time back but still hoping for help in this thread.
my son will be 3 by next Jan and i need to promote him from playgroup to Nursery. i’m thinking of 2 of private schools here which may not give hindi as a language (assumption). pls, any of you tell me how important for a kid to start learning hindi as MT @ the age of 3 to 6.
is it ok if i send him to private school and get him an extra class of hindi at the age of 4 or something. or is it better to start learning hindi as a part of curriculum?
