my dd is in P1 and is given a letter to attend remedial class for math. as far as i know, she is not bad at math..... Can any parent advise me on what basis are the kids chosen for remedial class.

Hi, as far as I know, the child must have a very good grasp of addition and subtraction within 10 for problem sums in term 1. If the child has difficulty for term 1 work, the child will face more difficulty in Term 2 work as Term 2 covers addition and subtraction within 20 and more stuff.

      http://www.moe.edu.sg/education/syllabu ... y-2013.pdf

Look at pg 34 onwards for the new math syllabus for p1.

The child must have good processing speed for doing Math problems.

Most of my child's Math worksheets and test papers have 1 or 2 mistakes and she is not required to attend remedial.

I prepare my child well before she enters Pri 1, not when she enters Pri 1 then I prepare her. One of my friend's child studies in one of the top primary schools located in east and her p1 child got single digit score and failed miserably for both English and Math. That was a big wake up call as all along she thought her child not bad too.

Use this March holidays to revise what the teacher has taught so far.

My child does comment that when she tried to ask questions in class, her teacher tells her to put her hand down!!!! I'm not sure if MCS teachers encourage their P1 children to ask questions in class to clarify doubts but I think all teachers should address their students' concerns. My child will clarify her doubts with me instead.

Math is all about practice. Keep practicing and you see improvement.

Thanks Sembgal 😄 I will let her practice during these hols. Hope she would be able to cope up in Term 2.

Is there a rule that states parents are not allowed to be in the canteen after our DD's CCA is over? My dd told me that a lady was using microphone to talk in the hall and telling all the P1 & P2 girls that they are big girls now, no need their mummies to come school to feed them like babies. My dd said mummies cannot go into canteen and stay too long there. The girls must buy food from canteen to eat. :yikes: School discourages parents to send food over or check on them after CCA is over.

I wonder what is the school trying to convey to the kids. If there is a need, issue a letter to the parents and notify them. Unless that person has not been a mother before, she will not understand that a mother worries if her child eats well or not.

Let me quote my senario. I gave my dd $4. After CCA is over, she bought some miscellaneous stuff that were selling near school canteen. I wonder for what purpose?! (Maybe for fundraising)Then my dd bought food and when I checked her remainder in her money purse later, only $0.30 was left! Horror! Can u imagine if I were not there to check, how can she survive on $0.30 for recess afterwards? I had to supplement her another $2.

I hope the school can understand that parents are concern about the general well-being of the children. Parents should be given access to the canteen to be with the children especially for the first month.
I share your same concern. my dd ended eating only fish balls for the lunch after CCA and the same during recess. She said the stalls had long queues and she didnt know where to buy noodles or rice from. i cant imagine how she could tahan with only fish balls from 9am until 7pm. I suggest school allows parents to guide their P1 girls atleast for the 1st month.

    • RE: What PSLE score are you expecting your child to get

My dd took her PSLE in 2011. She was in the best class but has never been among the top 5 in her school. We were really shocked, when she only got 17th place in the prelim. She realised all the students were studying hard. But this result served as a wake up call. Without getting dejected, she put in extra effort, and to our surprise she was the school topper with 266. So I think, it is still not too late. If a child works hard with full concentration, they can achieve their goals. All the best to all the kids taking PSLE this year.

give your DD your full blessing in whatever subjects she like best and NOT on GPA score. My DD and many of her friends, some been offered 2to3 or more RA subjects, but due to commitments in CCA, they are in the process of considering to drop or take fewer RA!. Just food for thoughts, as parents, we must support their decisions. I always tell my DD, mummy is not taking the exam, you are the one taking the exam, so you decide. We will give you our full blessing... :grphug:
Yes, very true. As parents, we have to support our children's decision. Luckily my DD is quite independant and so far whatever she does is her choice. she only discusses with me what she is upto and i give her my opinion. but the final choice is hers 🙂

my dd is in sec 2 this year. she in dilemma about choosing literature or geography in sec3. she likes lit but scores more for geog. she says it is difficult to score marks in lit.

i wish to get advise from someone who is doing lit.
      thanks.

Hello! I'm in year 3 this year and my subject combination is biochemhistlit. Initially I was deciding between lit and geog as well because I did better in geog than I did in lit. In the end I decided to go with lit instead because I feel more passion for it than I do for geog.

I would advise your daughter to take what she enjoys instead of choosing her subject combination according to what she does better in. Because when the tests and projects come more frequently she will be more motivated to study for a subject she likes. Also, syllabuses get harder as we age so a high GPA in lower sec might not mean that we will do as well in upper sec (just a thing to consider).

Lit is difficult at first but I think it's a beautiful subject. Analyzing written text is tough but gets easier with practice. Active participation in class helps a lot because you get feedback from the teacher about which ideas work and which don't.

Final subject combination does close until the end of the year, which gives your daughter time to decide where her interests lie and what she plans to do in her future studies(e.g. at JC level). Tell her to relax, have fun and study hard. Maybe she may discover things to love about each subject and that might make her decision easier 😄

Thanks for your detailed reply, circlesandsquares. I was just worrying if she would be able to cope up with lit in the higher levels even though she enjoys it now. but with the words of encouragement from choco05 and you, i'm now quite confident that she can choose lit without any hesitation 🙂

I did way better in geog but i still took lit instead. I think it doesn't matter about which one she does better in, the important thing is that she truly enjoys the subject. There's no point forcing yourself to study something you don't like for two years.

I can't really tell the difference between lit in upper and lower sec yet since the exams have yet to come, but it's only the beginning of the year so maybe your DD could take time to slowly think through her options. maybe towards the middle of the year she would be clearer with what she wants 🙂

Thanks for your reply Choco05. Really appreciate you for choosing your passionate subject. All the very best to you 🙂
