There were 3 boxes, X, Y and Z, containing 172 fruits altogether. Mrs Teo added some fruits into box X and the number of fruits in box X doubled.

She removed 2/3 of the number of fruits from box Y and added another 20 fruits into box Z. In the end, the fruits in box X, Y and Z are in the
ratio of 6 : 3 : 4 respectively.

1) how many fruits were there in box Y at first?

2) what is the ratio of number of fruits in box Z to the total number of fruits at first?

In the end,
X : Y : Z = 6u :3u :4u

At first,
X ---- > 6u/2 = 3u

Y ---> 3u x 3 = 9u

Z ---> 4u - 20


3u + 9u + 4u - 20 ----> 172

16u ----> 172 + 20 = 192

1u ---> 192/16= 12

Y: 9u ---> 12 x 9 = 108

a) There were 108 fruits in box Y at first.

Z : 4u - 20 = 12 x 4 - 20 = 28

28 : 172 = 7 : 43

b) The ratio of the number of fruits in box Z to the total number at first was 7 : 43.
