    • RE: * Nanyang JC (NYJC)

How is the culture like in NYJC? Since it is among the top non-IP JC, is the environment competitive? Are students or teachers pressured to perform? Is the school "unforgiving" to students who fall behind since they have to uphold their ranking? Are there systematic support given to students should they fall behind in performance?

      Hi all!

I'm a current j1 from NYJC taking BCME combination. I would like to clarify that even though school does start at 8.30 on assembly days (alternate days depending on level and all weds), some classes do start at or before 8am even though the combi is common (bmce in my case) so it depends on range of combis in the class and not necessarily individual. The time lessons end also depend on class and timetable, classes that end school earlier have lesser breaks etc and rare combis tend to end school earlier. School ends at 2.30 every Wednesday for both j1s and 2s. We run on a 2-week timetable which means timetable alternates every week. Feel free to ask any questions and ill try to answer using my personal experiences :rahrah:
Thank you for offering to answer any questions. Since you are in JC1 this year and not having A Level now, so i hope you have time to answer my queries.
      1) someone asked about the cut-off point for NYJC, but was not answered yet. What is cut-off for non-affiliated students?
      2) how big is the cohort/
      3) roughly how many per cent are from the non-affiliated schools?
      Thank you!

      phtthp:
For affliated \"O\" level students from Chung Ching High, what is the affliation Cut-off-point, to enter Nanyang JC ?

      Eg

If a Chung Ching High \"O\" level student scored 13 points for L1R5, can this affliated student still enter NYJC, for \"A\" level ?
May I know is Chung Ching High the only school affiliated to Nanyang JC? What is the cut-off point for those not from the affiliated school? My DS is eyeing the school.

Does the above picture include scholars from other JCs? 36 is still an impressive figure.

Yes, it is a picture shoot for all the scholars receiving different types of scholarships, regardless or which school they come from.

    • RE: House Renovation - designers or ala-carte?

If your reno is not major, and you have the time to coordinate, I would suggest you DIY. i just did my reno through an ID. They are very good at marketing before you commit, and I thought I will just pay for them to do a professional job for me, although it was quite expensive. However, once I paid the downpayment, i feel quite cheated as everything they recommend were out to fleece you. They recommend all the expensive fittings, as they take a cut from all your purchases. Sometimes, the recommendations were merely aesthetic, and not practical. For example, they suggested trove light in my son’s rooms, and fit with spotlight. The additional wetwork cost quite a bit, not to mention they recommended me some spotlights that cost me nearly $900. And the worst thing is that spotlights are so bright that they blind your eyes when you lie on the bed. This is just the tip of the ice-berg. Better do your homework before you engage one. And do not take up all their suggestions.

    • RE: Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)

I have a son in RI and one in another IP school. I think both schools are stressful, and comparing notes with my other friends who have children in other schools, I can only conclude that students everywhere are stressed. It is how they manage the stress and how we as parents give our support that matter most. I must say RI teachers give a lot of support to the boys, and they have very systematic approach in helping their students through the course of the year. Their notes are quite comprehensive, and revision and practice papers are given timely to help the boys guage their progress. Parents are informed through sms of important information. This is in comparison with my experience of the other son in the other IP school.
