Long hours? Without listing here, we also know there are many who work long hours, bring back their work, go the extra mile, etc etc. Not just teachers..

I presume your job also requires you to be at office before 730am every working day without fail, rain or shine, MRT breakdown or not ?

No. 5.25am to be precise. And I also work shifts. Teachers no leave? Teachers no holidays? Teachers no course to attend?
      doodley:
Just because no free parking, teachers cannot bring back books to mark? There is grab/taxi. If you calculate, it is still cheaper than owning a car...
Do you own a car ? If yes, why? You should probably just take Grab, its cheaper.

No I don't. Public transport is my main mode of transport.
      doodley:
But the truth is there are also many who teach because there is no other jobs available to them. And after teaching for a few years, it's just easier to stay put and get promoted....
You do have such lowly perceptions of teachers.

It's not lowly perception. It's just stating a fact. You conveniently left out that I acknowledge there are teachers who teach because they have a passion and calling.

teacher as mentor / part-time parent / counsellor? Just because there are some of such teachers doesn't mean all teachers are like that. In fact, it's not too good to be too close to teachers. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/vice-principal-accused-of-committing-indecent-acts-on-underage-9184362 See what can potentially happen when you look up to an educator as standin-parent/mentor/counsellor . ....
A few black sheep out of 33,000 teachers out there and that is enough for you to condemn the whole lot. I applaud you reasoning.

No where did i condemn the whole lot. I'm just saying things can potentially happen. Out of all these sexual abuse cases that happen in schools, they're mostly committed by educators that are close to the victims. By being too close to teachers, sometimes the line becomes blur. I know of parents who always gift their kids' teachers. These kids don't get into teacher's bad books. And you have teacher's playing favouritism leading to unfair opportunities. You may deny it but these are widespread cases.

It's never pleasant when we have to start paying for something which was free for the longest time. But let's not put the teaching profession above every other profession. Teachers are indispensable and so are a host of other professions.
You just don't get it. It is the simple gestures that counts. It is not about pleasantry in paying or not.

Free parking is a great gesture based on the tangible and intangible calculation some forumers made of the parking fees.

by the way, pleasantry means \"an inconsequential remark made as part of a polite conversation\" or \"a mild joke\".

Teachers are important, and so is every body else holding an honourable profession. That's my point.

To argue that the teaching profession is more honourable than others and therefore deserving of free parking is just flawed. Teachers make sacrifices, so do other professions. Teachers' family life is affected, so are others. It's up to you to adjust your schedules/expectations to make the best of the situation.

It's overload to hv to teach, do admin, do CCA under the sun & non-aircond locations, supp classes & so much more. I know coz some teachers chaperoned the sch kids for Competition & hv to talk to their own kids to settle their lunch & hmwk. When the team goes for overseas performances/competition, they miss their families like those who worked in offices, but they've to keep watch over the students whilst in foreign land (not one but handful)!
it's quite interesting to read through the arguments in their thread.

Many other jobs also need to cover-head-cover-tail. it's not just the teachers' job.

noble job? i do agree there are dedicated teachers who teach because of their passion and calling. But the truth is there are also many who teach because there is no other jobs available to them. And after teaching for a few years, it's just easier to stay put and get promoted.

Anyway, will wait n see how
Called up SMU 2 weeks ago
Was told to check daily their web portal

congrats on your ds nus law offer. you called up smu? why don't you let him handle it himself? Doesn't reflect well on him to have mummy calling the admissions office.

In case you are not aware, her ds is serving NS now. You should know he cannot make phone calls as and when he can.[/quote]of course i know. we have pm each other regarding other matters. but the enquiries were not of such urgent nature that they must be made as soon as possible. (E.g. calling to find if the results have been released.) Even if cannot make calls, can also email. The children are already 19 year olds. They are old enough to handle all these things themselves. More than often, we as parents are anxious. But in our anxiety, we want to take things into our own hands and run ahead of the children. This mollycoddling can put our children in tight spots. Try calling their boss next time when they start working. See what tight spot we will put them in.

Thank you pirated & mathtuition88. Kind of confirmed what I felt.

What about a Nanyang scholarship vs a NUS Merit scholarship, both non-bonded?

Will leave the choice to the child ultimately. But want to gather as much info and opinion so as to make an informed choice.

Actually many applicants to NUS already got the offers the next day after application submission.

NTU rushed out the offers in order to attract students who are worried about their application to NUS. Psycho games.
Yes I agree it's a psychological game NUS is playing, especially with the top 80%-100% percentile pupils. My observations is NUS is fast to churn out offers to those around 70%-80% percentile pupils. The rest are kept waiting.

I would appreciate any comments / info / feedback about a double degree programme in NUS which takes about 4.5-5 years vs a 4 years honours degree in NTU. Will that extra year in NUS be a deterrent to anyone? Thank you.

Another friend of DD got accepted to study medicine in NTU.

Why is it NTU n SMU are so quick to give replies versus NUS?
My friend who works in NUS told me, they pride themselves as the \"atas\" university. So they are quite \"ngiow\" in giving out scholarships cos they say even if they don't offer scholarships, still people will apply.
Also they will take their time to process applications, cos they feel that even if they give their answers late, people will still choose them over SMU / NTU. So there is no hurry for them to reply. This is probably true to some extent as we have parents here who say they are still waiting for NUS even though they have offers from other unis.

Quote from their website \"Students may also take up a scholarship from NTU or other organisations as PSP (Premier scholar programme) is not a scholarship.\"

I think the confusion arises as they name the scholarship after the program too. So technically a person can be enrolled in one of the PSP without a scholarship, or holding a scholarship from an external organisation.

What is PSP (Premier Scholar Programme)? Does it refer to the NTU Scholarships eg, Nanyang, CN Yang or does it refer to external scholarships (corporate, ministries etc) or both?

No, the PSP is a programme, much like NUS USP. http://admissions.ntu.edu.sg/Undergradu ... ammes.aspx

    • RE: Scholarships - University

😄 i guess we were told different things by different people.

We were there for the tea session / interview and were told that USP is a program by itself and is not a scholarship. (I'm not sure about the CNYang or REP) The number of people they admit into USP and other scholar programs are limited. And looking at how NTU is really aggressive with their offer of scholarship to students with good A level results, the combination of these 2 factors will probably mean most of those in the scholars programme hold some form of scholarship too.

Our first offer of USP came without the USP scholarship.
