    • RE: All About Speech Therapy

      sunnertime:
      Hi all

My son coming to 2.5 years old , still babbling only. At times he will imitate words. He went to a pte ST two times but keep on crying during the session. It really waste of $$ ,150 / hr do nothing only crying.
I tot of changing to another ST as this currently did not tried to build rapport with him , more of manage his behaviour (that y alot crying). Im pretty stress up as my son still not yet even calling papa and mama.

Do you all have any recommendation for ST?

Also, would like to find out if children with speech delay should attend special sch or just go therapy.
My son receptive is quite poor too, depend alot on gesture to follow instruction. His speech is around 1 yr old according to the report (so far has rule out ASD).
Im pretty lost what to do and stress up , really not sure if he will grow up to be typical boy.
      Hi sunnertime,

My son is now close to 4 years old. When he was about 2.5 years old, he only had single-syllable sounds and a very small vocabulary of about 30 words. He also had speech therapy for a few months but wailed and cried through it all so I stopped. I didn't put him into any kind of special school. But I placed him in preschools with very low teacher child ratio so he can get a bit more attention. He has improved in the past one and a half years and now he can speak in short sentences, although his articulation is unclear. He is still delayed compared to kids his age but I'm happy for the improvement he's made.

Other than selecting the preschool carefully, I also bought some speech therapy videos. There's a series called Baby Babble that you can buy from Amazon. My son learnt many sounds and words from those videos. They're developed by a pair of speech therapists. Also, there is a Hanen programme called It Takes Two. I think you can register at KK if you want to attend the workshop. I bought the book and a DVD for caregivers from the Hanen Australia website.

      Hope this helps!

      Hi,
Not sure if this will be useful to you... My toddler son has speech delay and I bought him a series of DVDs called Baby Babble. They are created by US speech therapists. He likes them and has learnt to make more sounds and he tries to say more words.
HTHs... You can read the reviews on Amazon to see if they're suitable for your son.

i will find tt how old is your son?[/quote]He will be 2 & a half in August.

kids suspected of slower development in speech should also go for hearing check

if they don't hear well, they won't learn the speech, and in some cases, it is simply too much ear wax.  but true
Thanks... We also heard about that, so we put our son though a hearing test to ensure that his ears were alright...

      Hi Sheryl,

Your son must be able to make sentences now since he is only 4 months behind. That's really great! Agree with you that parental involvement is very important.

Can you share with me how you encourage your son to move from single to multi syllables? Thanks. 😄

    • RE: Where to buy crocs online?

You can go to endless.com, which is owned by Amazon. They don’t have all the Crocs models but have a sufficiently wide range. The good part is if you can accumulate USD$100 of products, you get free international shipping.

4 months behind is quite minor, I think. I am sure your son will catch up very quickly.

My son is not very cooperative during speech therapy classes - hopefully he will improve. Probably because of the lack of cooperation, the therapist is not able to do much of an assessment on him for now.
What was your son like at about 2 and a half years old? My son is still at single syllable. There is a slow but steady increase in his number of words, which is encouraging. But all still single syllable.

    • RE: Verbal Dyspraxia / Apraxia

      Hi Star89,

I read about the fish oil supplement so I bought some for my son too, but not the Efalex brand. I think it’s the Childlife brand which can be given to 2 year olds. Only just started a week ago, hope that there will be some positive effect.
I have a friend whose son has dyspraxia and she said her son spoke in sentences at 5 years old. This was after a lot of therapy and placing him in a low ratio preschool setting. She said that she hasn’t come across many cases of dyspraxia in Singapore. So far this is the first thread on dyspraxia on this forum, I believe.

      Hi Sheryl,

How old is your boy? My boy is 28 months. He goes to daily playgroup. He has been seeing a speech therapist for the past 2 months after I realised that he is significantly behind in his speech, compared to his older siblings’ language development. His paed recommended the therapist,
I am also wondering if speech and drama classes would be good for him.

    • RE: Verbal Dyspraxia / Apraxia

      Hi Star89,

How old was your son when he was diagnosed? My son is only 28 months but I suspect he may have verbal dyspraxia. He spoke late and currently still at mono syllables, and not able to combine two words. His speech is also not clear. I brought him to our doctor when he was 26 months and the doctor recommended speech therapy. My son has been seeing the speech therapist for the past 2 months. I also have been looking around for resources such as speech-enhancing DVD etc to help boost my son’s speech. He doesn’t have any official diagnosis yet, but I can see a marked delay in his speech compared to my two older kids.
