    • RE: Secondary School Third Languages

      šŸ˜“ hi parents!

Currently a student studying Bahasa Indonesia (B.I) in moelc (bishan). To be honest i had already originally intended/planned to take up third language while planning ahead before psle (either japanese or B.I) . I ended up not making it to be eligible for japanese so i opted for B.I instead. I personally feel that the pace that moelc curriculum goes is quite fast and not advisable to take if you aren't going to put in hard work. an overview for my s1 year was learning the basic alphabets and numbers the first few lessons, and right after that, every week would be a brand new topic with a new list of vocabulary and discussions, with grammar rules being taught as we go along. s2 will be even more topics that goes further from what is taught in s1. s3 includes more content like real world problems such as handphone addiction, the environment, etc, and with graded projects as well such as presentations on a real world problem and what we can do to fix it.

I can't say much about the difficulty of exams as i already had some B.I background beforehand and had a solid foundation prior to taking lessons at moelc so i never found the papers too difficult, but according to my other classmates without background, most of them said they are able to cope well because our teacher gives us lots of opportunities to practise the language! We have little games and discussions, as well as exposure to media like books and commercials, entirely in the language we are learning, which helps us a lot in familiarising words!

To summarise everything up: as long as you're willing to learn, not slack, and have confidence to keep up with a fast pace leading up to o levels, i'll definitely encourage you or your child to opt for third language!

if you have any questions regarding moelc culture or the B.I curriculum there feel free to ask me! will try my best to give informed answers that can help you better decide what's best for your child šŸ™‚
