Young children, and even adults, benefit from gain experience through hands-on practice. This is because the learning process starts with
(1) Doing something (Concrete Experimentation)
(2) Thinking about it (Reflection)
(3) Talking with others and applying what we already know (Abstract Conceptualisation)
In school, however, there is not enough time planned for hands-on learning (i.e. Doing something). More often than not, teachers have to skip the steps in the learning process and teach by explaining scenarios or concepts (i.e. Abstract Conceptualisation). Children may find explanation difficult to understand if they have not experienced it before.
Parents can help by going through the concepts taught in school again by re-creating it using real-life objects, or ask your child to use hands-on materials to illustrate the problem. This is especially helpful for math and science.
