The night before exam-light reading. Do something relaxing like taking a walk or watching some light Tv programmes.

    • RE: Listening to music while doing homework?

it really depends on individual preferences- but once the period of experimentation is over and your child has found good music for productive study it will be okay!

    • RE: How do you instill self-motivation in a child?

I think its important to have those conversations that gives a child confidence in pursuing his or her own passions. This confidence is the intrinsic driver of self-motivation.

    • RE: How to motivate your child to read independently?

I think its possible to build interest in reading books by making it a relaxation activity as opposed to an obligation.

    • RE: Are Singapore students too stressed out?

I think stress is there regardless of whether you’re in Singapore or not. It depends on what the stress is about, obviously in Singapore it is about grades. In other countries, it may be more about finding one’s passion (sadly this is not the case in Singapore).

    • RE: Teaching Children to Think and Reason

I completely agree! I think the most important thing to do is never to shut down ideas no matter how outlandish or unrealistic it may seem. Having that mentality of talking about ideas is something that separates the good from the best students.

    • RE: All About Working With Children Who Are Weak Academically

I think its just important to give the child some room to pursue her passion first, and with the right support and guidance, the rest will fill in nicely.

    • RE: All About Working With Children Who Are Weak Academically

I think the best thing a parent can do is let their child know that they are being supported in their passions (can be outside of school work).

If the child feels happy, he or she can then apply the passion for that endeavour into their academics eventually. There is a balance between work and play so to speak. Otherwise, if a parent has to keep coaxing the child into studying, this will not be a sustainable solution in the long run.
