RE: PM Lee's National Day Rally on Sunday to be broadcast
3Boys:
Well said! :udaman:Singapore's Primary schools are PUBLIC schools, funded from taxpayer's money. They are NOT the private playground of alumni.
In higher education, alumni do NOT gain priority admission for the offspring, and certainly not in perpetuity, even if they are active contributors.
Therefore, the notion that alumni should gain absolute priority for their children for admission to a school is patently FALSE.
Show me one other country in the world where this applies?
The problem is that this has been around for so long, that parents have engendered an entitlement mentality towards it, even when the fundamental logic is seriously flawed. -
RE: [Bukit Timah] Primary Schools
phtthp:
those renting Shelford condo :-Justdoit:
If stay within 1km to mgs, I think will be safer since they still have 10 more vacancies. But stay within 1km to rgps and nyps will unlikely be near to mgs.
they're actually within 1 km, from both Nanyang / RGPS.
are they also within 1 km from MGS, or within 1 to 2 km from MGS ?
if outside 1 km of MGS, then no chance, because MGS will ballot, within 1 km.igolfers:
this afternoon, may see a jump in numbers. Those who can't tahan the balloting stress in Nanyang, may jump ship to RGPS.A friend of mine and her cousin will switch from NYPS to RGPS this afternoon. sigh....I am hoping they do not do it....but how can i dissuade them???
The NYPS parents are praying that more drop out of the race so they have a higher chance in ballots... -

RE: Chiltern House
Rainbow98:
Hi Rainbow98,Hi Mummies,
Heard not so good comments on CH's new branch at Mountbatten. Some teachers are new and thus, don't get your money's worth for the \"CH thingy\" that you pay for. Check out the teacher's previous experiences and qualifications before you send your child in. I guess other branches might be better.
i wonder what is the source of your misleading comments. I feel that your comments are very unfair to the justice of what CH Mountbatten has done for their students and wld like to share my geunine experience rather than HEARSAY and GOSSIPY UNTRUTHS.
Personally, i sent my child to CH Mountbatten and i find the principal and all the teachers to be very professional. My daughter is very happy in school. She was previously withdrawn in another pre-school and was labelled as ''quiet & timid\" but after switching her to CH Mountbatten, she opened up and became less shy. She is even able to speak up in class now and look forward to sharing stories with her classmates.
She is also more independent and is able to feed herself during mealtimes without much supervision. She is also toilet trained in school and now almost 90% successful. The teachers were very patient with her and i like the way they encourage each student to shine. I like their positive approach to handling each different students and do not label the child as \"naughty\". \"talkative\" etc...
I have observed the children in class and i can see the spontaneity of their behaviour in class versus the withdrawn and conformist behaviour of kids in another pre-school that my child was in previously. The teachers are all wonderful and they can remember the names of all the students despite whether they are N1, N2 or K1 teachers. They all display caring nature and a nuturing approach to childhood learning. I feel very at ease leaving my daughter in school and assured that she is well looked after.
Mostly, i love the clean and bright airy classrooms and the lovely clean playground. I had visited the other CH at Halifax and Bukit Timah, but i chose Mountbatten becos the BRAND NEW facility impresses me the most. I live somewhere central so either location is about same travelling time, so i picked Mountbatten. I was offered a space in CH Bukit Timah & Forum but turned both down and chose Mountbatten instead.
Hope Mummies out there do visit the preschools and make an informed decision rather than jugding based on what you read on forums. Some people are competitors and may not make real comments or they may be trying to make the queue shorter for themselves...
You may send me a personal message if you want to know further about my experiences etc. I will be most happy to help. -
RE: Kids can be 'enriched' at home too
Hi Rachelmum,
thanks for sharing your experience. It is very inspirational to reach about successful home education. NOwadays, many mothers depend too much on outside enrichment classes thinking that it will give the child an edge on the academic ladder. Sometimes, we bring them to enrichment classes as an excuse not to teach them ourselves. Or we do not try hard enough to spend some time dedicated to teaching our child. I think many mums buy into all these marketing gimmicks of how some centres promise to turn your child around etc etc. After reading your posting, i am determined not to sign up for all these expenisve enrichment classes for time being and put more effort into home educating. I have seen some really intelligent angmo kids around 2 to 3 yrs of age and they are all self taught by their moms. And i have seen kids who go to shichida, GUG etc.. and they dun seem very brilliant to me. I think it all depends on the parents utimately to nuture your children. Spending money is never a guarantee of success. It makes the parents feel like they are doing something for the child but there is no guuarantee that spending all those money to get them ready for P1 will mean anything. Moreover, now many schools have scrapped exams for P1. I think giving them a positive learning experience and giving a good foundation early in life on approach to things is every important to cultivate them and prepare them for the future. It is the character that builds the person and drives his future success. Not so much who knows ABCs at an earlier age. I am so sick of mums who keep comparing to see whose kids can recognise all the alphabets, read words or speak sentences or sing that song... does it all mean anything??? We are the ones creating the black hole and sucking into it ourselves by failing to recognise that education is more than all these indicators. Knowing your ABCs at a young age doesn't guarantee that ur be a smart thinking kid. I think nuturing a kid from young on self confidence to solve their problems can lead to so much more in life.
Anyway, just my two cents worth. :celebrate: -
RE: Chinese Preschool
Hi, you may wish to consider JG as well. Heard that they are starting new nursery classes next year conducted entirely in Mandarin. I like their Mandarin teachers a lot. They are PRC, very animated, lively and apt at handing the different temperament of each child. I like the fact that their chinese is accurate not like SG chinese which is chapalang.
