Hi chloecube,
Has your child shown improvement for his subjects? My eldest scored 55 for maths sa1 when she was in p6, but within 4 months of hard work and good guidance, she managed to get an A* for psle in year 2012. So it’s not impossible if he keeps pushing on for his subjects.

RE: Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) [*IP]
Is our education turning somewhat \"communistic\"? There is no incentive to be smart or work hard now because MOe is trying to encourage every to appear average, not so called 'elitist'. I pray, there will not be anymore knee jerk reactions.
I totally agree with the observation. In fact being top is now a \"dirty\" word. In my nieces's primary school, being top in class is kept \"hush hush\" and not celebrated anymore. Worse still, the class has to be split up for mother tongue and maths because the school feels it's \"elitist\" to group the higher ability ones together in a form class. They'd rather waste time splitting and re-grouping the kids for mother tongue and math. -

Actually her charges are the same as Concept Math and Vitamindz. She’s very strict and I like that for my kids.

RE: PSLE 2013 - Results Discussion
Now that everything is so hush hush, won’t parents be even more kiasu to deal with the uncertainty? Parents just want the qns set at psle to be within the parameters of what’s been taught. They did not ask for all this secrecy. Is the govt reading too much into it and making parents upset again with their wrong interpretation of what parents want?

Not all school will provide the mean and standard deviation nowadays. It used to be printed on the result slip but now school is so hush hush even the subjects highest mark is no longer revealed! With all the unknown, how do parents know when to press the panic button?

Even the mean and SD would be diff for diff schools so we will not know how reflective is the info of the actual situation -

Agree. Homework and drilling at too young an age is detrimental to a child's passion for learning. They'll associate learning with something negative and unhappiness.Your kid cried because their fingers are not fully developed yet. Fully developed is 6 years old. That's why when you ask your kid to write, they just can't hold the pencil properly.
Please do not injure their precious tiny fingers.
Too young to learn Abacus. 6 is the age to grasp what is being taught. Mothers please do not waste your money.
Send them for Speech & Drama both English & Chinese. Let them enjoy the class and learn faster through plays. That will help to build their confidence and language skill as well. -
RE: How many IP Govt schools are there?
Maybe this is to encourage teens to start early in socialising and working together with the opp gender.
Imagine "Nanny" saying: Start building your network from Sec 1, so that when you enter the workforce later, you’ve a larger pool of potential suitors (with the SAME Intellect, SAME IP background, SAME social strata maybe) in your database to tap on?
u see, by the time u go to JC, u won’t hv the time/energy to pak tor, cos 2 yrs is too intensive and short-span. Before u know it, you’re in uni and the boys are enlisted. Unless u live in halls or join societies, or attend religious fellowships, it’s really hard to meet your soulmate.
I’ve met a few all-boys sch friends still singles in their early 40s. 1 or 2 are happy in their closets. Others just become grinches who siam Christmas parties.
So mix them up! Towards a 6.9 mil population!
Haha! Well-said! That’s so true. I am sure the govt has a reason for everything they do! -
RE: P1 MATHS ENRICHMENT CTR
Had a friend whose child went to MPM. When he was in P3, he was so lost when he had to do ACS higher order questions. As a result, confidence was at rock bottom. You may not see the disparity till the child hits P3 and above.

Agree. For P1 and P2, better to get a centre that incorporates fun in learning but yet delivers the methododology and concepts well in the Singapore context. Try to get a centre with ex-school teachers or school teachers who know the singapore syllabus well.HI,
My 2 cents opinion. I would discourage kids to do MPM from P2 and onwards. If you look at the syllabus and the type of questions that is now tested, it requires heuristic methodologies to solve, especially the higher order questions. After all, MPM is not a local programme and is not designed for the Singapore school syllabus.
Certainly MPM will help, so is any local math tuition centre. And I can confidently say that the questions your child will be doing in any local tuition centre would certainly beat MPM in terms of relevancy to the Singapore math syllabus. -

Maybe they are of that age…more sensitive and emotional than before.
