LSE is an excellent university and is ranked 4th in the world for international relations, according to the QS rankings. Rankings aside, your dd will have much to gain from studying overseas. The experience of living independently, gaining a world view and exchange of ideas with an international student body are very desirable. If finances are not an obstacle, I would say go for LSE. Having said that, a local scholarship is also attractive with the security of a job upon graduation. But scholarships come with bonds and who knows she may realise later that this is not what she wants in her career.

Out of curiosity, why didn't your dd apply to study economics in LSE?

On your question on why my dd did not choose Economics at LSE, it was likely because she felt that her Economics was not that strong at the point of application, she is also interested in studying IR after looking through the contents of the course.

Are you (or any parent here) able to shed some light on the prospect of IR degree? I guess this course is more specialised (and hence narrower) in terms of career path as compared to Economics. I know nothing much about this course as it is often too common to hear about Engineering, Medicine, Law, Business, Economics but not this in Singapore (most of my surrounding friends never heard of this). LSE seems to be more \"famous\" for Economics though IR is also in high ranking.

Or we should not be too concerned about the course as of now as LSE itself is already a brand name and it comes with tons of overseas experience that should not be missed ?

I would like to seek the opinion of the community here on the choice of university after A level:
My DD has been accepted to study:
1.UK LSE London School of Economics & Political Science - International Relations (IR) (3 years)
2.NUS Double degree Economics & Business (4 years) with USP (University Scholars Programme, not a scholarship ie no sponsorship of fees, just a programme)

In addition, she has been offered a local bonded scholarship to study locally for Econs only, ie have to drop Business.

We are in dilemma on whether she should proceed with her LSE overseas, or shall she stay locally to study with a career door opened for her upon graduation.

While we are familiar with local NUS Econs degree prospect, what do you think of the experience and prospect of LSE IR ?
Is going to LSE a rare opportunity that she shall not forgo?

Financially we are ready to support her to LSE though it will be on thrifty budget definitely. But the bonded scholarship is equally attractive as it is what she likes to do upon graduation.

Also, if the local bonded scholarship is not taken into consideration, how is NUS Econs & Business compare to LSE IR?

For my DD, at this point of time, she is interested to pursue her career in government sector. She is very disciplined and independent hence studying overseas shall not be a problem for her.

My relative’s child is in this school. I happen to compare the daily school hours. Fyi, this school set Friday as CCA day, ie, whole school has their CCA on Fri. Hence the lost of academic time on Friday are being make up on Mon to Thurs, therefore their school hours from Mon to Thursday end rather late at 3pm+.

Talking about shoes… yes my DS also came back with two different shoes after a health check exercise in P1. The teacher was kind enough to go up to stage the next day to make an announcement to ask if anybody wore two different shoes home too! As expected, the shoe was never found…I think the other child also did not realise he/she wore the wrong shoe.

My P2 boy has lost 4 storybooks in school this year alone. All these books were what I carefully selected for him from Popular/amazon.


I was exemplarily patient the first time this happened - just reminding ds to be careful next time; went ballistic the second time (which happened the very next day :stompfeet: ). The third time, I made him pay for the lost book by deducting $1 from his daily allowance until I recovered the cost.

The fourth time happened yesterday. You know, when you're really disgusted with someone, you don't even want to look them in the face. I'm disgusted. :mad:

Like most parents, I think that I've made sacrifices for my child. Darn! I've made lots of sacrifices. I deserved better. :sad:

There was a time when I have similar thoughts, but when time passes, I have a clearer picture.
When I left my job to be a SAHM, my colleagues would said:\"wow, it's a big sacrifice!\". I puzzled. Why do we want to put ourselves in the situation to weigh doing things for them as a sacrifice, it actually becomes a burden on ourselves and in our hearts, we can't help to assume that he supposed to be obedient and be a good boy as we sacrificed for them. Because we view it as sacrifice, we expect returns. We forgot that he has his own character and it is not that we \"sacrifice\" something and he will be better.
Instead of thinking it as a sacrifice, I focus on how to help him further and it actually released me from feeling lousy and feel better at times.
This is my personal opinion and I hope it can help you feel better

Btw, my DS lost books countless times, he ever lost school library books that I have to buy back books worth $40 to return to school, another time he lost a NLB book and I have paid $50 plus. I was rather mad at first but I settled it calmly eventually. He was only P2 then. To reduce the risk, I have stop allowing him to bring library books to school and read. He could not remember where he left it. He usually forgets homework, even if he rushed to finish homework till late night, he will forget to hand up next day! I have to keep on reminding him. For water bottles, I have since given him mineral water bottles instead as he has lost numerous of them including some good ones. He has to learn that he has to build up the trust first if he wants to resume the benefits. There are lots of things happened due to his character. I have accepted that all these are just part of them.
I can fully understand how you feel... he will definitely improve when he is older, be it 15 or 17, he will be there. That is what I keep on telling myself. As what 2aappmm said, the only thing we need is really Patience... it is easy to say than done, let's remind each other through KSP forum !

You may call the school directly or call MOE hotline 68722220, they will assist you when you quote the school name, need to specify stream (E/NA/NT) and affiliation/non-affiliation for those schools with affiliations.
