I don’t know abt NUSH but at RI, the environment to pursue MO ambition is v conducive. Other than possessing talent and perseverance, it is v important for a person aspiring to be in IMO to be able to learn together with a pool of such talents. This enables a healthy exchange of knowledge and ideas on a constant basis. This kind of sparring is essential, during both math classes and math club activities.


For pupils who hv qualified for national training, RI gives very gd support to this group of IMO potentials by engaging trainers (usually ex-IMO medalists) for intensive coaching leading up to the selection tests. These sessions take up many hrs of intense focus on MO problem-solving skills at the highest level during normal curriculum time.

There are a couple of RI teachers who are extremely devoted to their tasks of nurturing RI talents and to mentor / guide these boys to achieve their IMO dream. The comaraderie they share with the old and current boys is amazingly strong.

I am so happy for the RI math dept and not just for those who got into the IMO team, but ALL the math enthusiasts from yr1-6 and ex-RI MOs.

This will surely inspire the junior RI boys to work hard and believe in themselves tt they too can be at IMO one day.

Hoping Team Singapore will do superbly in July in Bath! All the best to everyone especially the 5 RI members and the 3 trainers (all ex-RI boys)!!

I meant the Top 3 from each level from both branches combined and the annual award ceremony is conducted at one place, usually Newton Branch.


So as one progresses to a higher level, the pool of competitors gets smaller as there will be dropouts at each level.

Each year, the H2 A level classes are restricted to a certain number which makes the chance of getting a trophy at JC levels higher than say, at sec 1 level.

It is quite common for many of the gd scorers to hv received tuition as many deem themselves as being weak in certain subjects eg econs or GP for the STEM-inclined ones.

Sometimes, they feel the need for tuition to help them grasp concepts better. Or they may feel tt their sch tutor is unable to help them reach distinction level. They want tt sense of security to get the A grades.

I realise schools don't honour students who did the best in MOELC foreign language subjects during school prize giving. I am just wondering does MOELC present any awards to encourage the best performance in 3rd lang?

MOELC prize presentation ceremony takes place every year around end May, usually at Newton

The top 3 from each level for each language will receive trophies.

And traditionally, speeches were made by the top A level students for jap, German, French and now Spanish too, I guess, in the respective languages, with slides of their learning journeys. These valedictorians will receive trophies from the respective embassy representatives.

The buffet after tt comprises finger food from the several cultures.

The Lit distinction rate of 90% and the GP distinction rate of 57% are truly impressive.

I don’t know abt the other JCs. Only RIJC’s.
