hi! i'm new here! all along have been browsing through all the topics but just had to comment this time. my boy has actually attended the preview lesson with their trainer. i wasn't really sure if i should let him join at 1st but thought since the preview lesson is complimentary then why not.
so we went there and the trainer was really nice and explained to me what the whole course is about. they have specially designed workbooks with very interesting questions. unlike those standard math questions (which my boy finds it very boring and will tend to lose focus after a few pages). they also get to learn chess and apply the thinking skills on the questions in their workbooks.
he has been to his 2nd lesson and he is always looking forward to the next lesson. after the lesson he'll be very excited to take out his chess set and show us what he had learnt in class. seeing him learning and having fun at the same time makes me happy as well. personally i don't think its a good idea to force them to attend many lessons and to be the 1st in class. many parents nowadays want the best for their kids but end up pushing them too hard. which i think shouldn't be the case.
just my personal opinion! hope all the kids will enjoy their learning process as much as my boy does!

IntChess Asia is teaching a purely chess program. I am not 100% sure about SCF because I don't patronize them but since they're the national chess federation, they should concentrate on purely chess alone too.
hi qizai, can i check with you if both SCF and IntChess Asia are teaching a pure chess program? i went for the preview lesson at this ho math and chess centre and they are offering an integrated math and chess program. i've seen their workbooks and it looks quite interesting. they use chess symbols and stuff like that to do math puzzle questions. they even showed me the correlation of the program with the moe math syllabus. but am curious if SCF and IntChess Asia are teaching this also? would like to have more options. thanks!ongcheryl:

i just called up the centre to find out more. its actually learning math through chess. tried to find out more but v difficult to understand over the phone. so they arrange a preview lesson for me and my girl next week. but it sounds interesting though. coz the kids get to learn both math and chess. guess i will go for the preview lesson 1st and share more abt it here next time!
While a mixture of chess and maths sound interesting, will the program you mention teach proper chess (as in all the rules, and proper play, development etc)? That's something to think about, I suppose.
Of course it depends on your emphasis. If your emphasis is on Maths, then the program you are thinking about may be the one. But if it's more on chess, I feel a pure chess program is better.
Hope that helps.
i tink the program probably teaches them the fundamentals only. unlike IntChess Asia. i tink their ultimate goal is to improve math and it happens that chess is a method to achieve that goal. now i'm not so sure what is more impt. to let my girl be trained in chess or to improve her math. schools now are so competitive after all. i din know it'll be so difficult to choose enrichment programs for my girl. there's so many types around! haha. but thanks for your info qizai! -
Hi all,
the chess you all are referring to is international chess right? i have a 4 year old daughter and am interested to let her attend some courses. i was searching online and happened to chance upon a math and chess website. something about learning math through chess or the other way round. sounds good but yet a little skeptical about it. anyone heard of this program can enlighten me? would appreciate any replies. thanks! http://www.mathandchess.com.sg
Does it use math to teach chess, or the other way around, or both?
Check up http://www.intchessasia.com , that's where I got my son enrolled last time. But it turns out that one of the bosses in IntChess Asia left, and went to SCF to offer similar courses.
Honestly, I wouldn't know which one is better, SCF or IntChessAsia. Their curriculum is rather identical to me.. -
