During the Q&A session of an NUS High Zoom session regarding admissions, this question was asked and the answer given was \"no\", in essence, they do not just look at MO or SO. They look primarily at \"interest and aptitude\", according to the teacher-in-charge, rather than the background.

Any case of children who is already in NUSH and got in purely based on school math/science exam results?
Yes. My friend's daughter had neither math nor science Olympiad exposure. Not all schools provide equal opportunities for MO or SO, hence students are not penalised for that.

Even if very luckily got in, wouldn't it be very stressful for someone who has totally no math Olympiad background and start from the scratch?
My understanding is that MO is not all that related to mainstream MOE maths- yes, the thinking process and all that but the subjects covered are all the same, it is not as if you miss learning new topics all together- but NUS High specific I am not so sure. I believe it is the same.
If you are concerned, after PSLE, you can send your child for training. No shortage of centres offering MO training.

If I am not wrong the intake is around 100 plus only.

I really wish that my son can get into a school that can nurture him for his interest in math and NUSH seems to be a very good one. However, is it too unrealistic for his case? Should I drop it or give it a shot? Am I wasting one of my 3 DSA choices?

Their curriculum seems fascinating- modular, ability to do Uni modules in Year 5 or 6 for high achievers etc- and if i recall correctly, half of their teachers are Masters or PhDs. For someone passionate in Math or Science, it seems the best bet.

Alternatively there is School of Science and Technology but it appears several tiers below and gears towards preparing students for Poly rather than Uni. I might be wrong; I didn't pay much attention as I want my child to take IP or equivalent.

As for whether it is wasting one of your 3 DSA choices, it really depends on you and your child.

My child and I discussed and we decided to utilise only 2 DSA choices since if she got an offer from a 3rd school, she would not accept it as she would rather wait for her PSLE results to go for one of the 2 choices.

(Incidentally, NUS High has historically held a Supplementary Intake Exercise if they did not fill the quota during DSA.)

Perhaps the last line gives you a better idea of what they are looking for and better assess your son's suitability.

Another consequence could be on mentality of parents, those who are balloted into top schools will be perceived as more lucky rather than better scorers than those who were balloted out. So gradually the top schools may lose some lustre? That will be welcomed change by MOE.

This is a good point. To me, the difference between the top tier of schools- i.e., those with SBGE (RI, RGS, HCI, NYGH, ACS, DHS, NUS High), followed by IP schools- is not significant in terms of quality of education. Mainly down to culture and CCA and, yes, prestige. If the perception is that someone entering RI instead of ACS is down to luck as opposed to ability, the clamour for the top few may be lesser, and no one would feel aggrieved getting their second choice instead of their first as long as it is within the same tier.

Having a hard time deciding on schools. My son scored AL9(M) and we are tossing around a few options. He is attracted to the idea of skipping another major exam in 4 years but not exactly fixated about getting into IP and he has an affiliated secondary school with cut off at AL12 (for non-affiliates). Given these considerations, we are thinking of:
1.\tCatholic High – IP (AL8)
2.\tCatholic High – O’levels (AL9M)
3.\tACSI – O’levels (AL9)
4.\tSJI – O’levels (AL10)
5.\tAffiliated School (AL12)

For #1 and #2 scenario – our hypothesis is that if he can’t get into Catholic High IP and Catholic High O’levels goes into tiebreaker, given that he is Singaporean and had chosen the same school in #1 and #2, the system still views his choice of Catholic High as first choice. Can I pls affirm this understanding?

Given that we have SJI and affiliated school as #4 and #5 and there is a 1–2-point buffer here, this should be a safe fall-back strategy to at least get into either one of these schools if he fails to get into the schools ranked ahead?

Appreciate any feedback and advice.

Indicative IP CHS is 8(M) so it's unlikely your son will get it, there still AL8(P), AL8 & AL9(D) above his score.
If COP CHS is exactly the same with the indicative 9(M), it's disadvantage to put it in the 2nd order because kids put it in 1st order will get in first.
It's also the same disadvantage to put ACSI in 3rd order.
As there's possibility this year COP not exactly the same with indicative (means can be higher or lower) so if that order is your son's best choice of preference, then you can go with it.

You need another safety net to replace the affiliated school.

My tiger daughter will be thrust into action next year. I would be interested to see the actual COP this year as I believed mapping from T-Score to AL can be misleading.

Looking forward to MOE releasing the 2021 data so I can parse through and analyse.

Additional:
I have a suspicion the COP for the SAP schools will look markedly different as the HCL bonus points will no longer factor in unless a tie.
For example under the old system, someone with merit in HCL would get 2 points, hence, combining with a T-score of 259 would get 261 (some years, the COP for NYGH).
Under the new system, she would get AL 7 (guesstimate) with M.
However, someone getting 260 (guesstimate AL6) under the old system would now get in ahead of AL7 because HCL grades only play a role in the event of a tie.

This is my guess but will need more data to clarify.

I based this on the observation that HCI/RI & NYGH/RGS historically have similar COP, but not under MOE’s indicative COP. We will have a better idea next year.

If I were in your position, I wouldn't put HCI first choice as the odds are low and not worth wasting the benefit of placing as first priority. AL7 was the indicative COP was NJC last year, so with citizenship and first choice, even with ballot the odds are good. VS (IP) seems a reasonable safety net though Cat High, being a SAP where the HCL makes a difference, might be safer.

As for the distribution poll, I believe it is skewed since it is updated and monitored by parents who take a keener interest in their children's education and therefore, all else being equal, likelier to have better results.
