• RE: Q&A - P5 Math

1) Gabriel bought 8 boxes of pens. There were 20 pens in each box. He sold 3/5 of them at $1.30 each. 3/4 of the remaining pens were sold at 4/5 of its original price. He then gave away the rest of the pens. Gabriel found that he collected $67.80 more than what he paid for the pens. How much did Gabriel spend on buying the pens?

Find the number of pens: 8 x 20 = 160
Find how many Gabriel sold at first: 160 / 5 x 3 = 96
How much he earned at first: 96 x 1.3 = 124.8
3/4 of remaining pens: 160 - 96 = 64. 64 /4 x 3 = 48
Cost of 1 of 3/4 of the remaining pens: 1.3 / 5 x 4 = 1.04
Cost of 3/4 of the remaining pens: 1.04 x 48 = 49.92
How much Gabriel earned: 49.92 + 124.8 = 174.72
How much Gabriel bought for the pens: 174.72 - 67.80 = 106.92 (Answer)

• RE: Q&A - P5 Math

Since Box A can either hold 60 small or 48 big, the ratio of big to small is 48 : 60 which is equivalent to 4 : 5. 4 refers to big and 5 refers to small. When 10 small are placed, it is equivalent to 8 big as the ratio is equivalent. Since 8 + 12 big are placed and the box can hold 48 big, take 48 - 20 = 28.

Need help.....

Question :

A container weighs 15 kg when it is filled with liquid A. The same container weighs 6 kg when it is filled with liquid B. If liquid A is 3 times as heavy as liquid B, what is the mass of the container?

Thank you in advance..
Hi,
Assume the container is 1 part, Liquid A is 3 units and Liquid B is 1 unit as Liquid A is 3 times as heavy as Liquid B. To find 2 units, take 15 kg - 6 kg which is equal to 9 kg. 1 unit is 9 kg / 2 which is equal to 4.5 kg. Since Liquid B is 1 unit, take 1 part and 1 unit (6 kg) - 1 unit (4.5 kg) which is equal to 1 part (1.5 kg) which is the mass of the container
Answer: 1.5 kg

I will give quick 2 examples from German Dance in C

http://i60.tinypic.com/3vpll.png\">

This is bar 3-5. The LH is obviously hard to manage for kids. But in this case, the harmony can be modified a bit. The original bars use #ivdimB to V, a musically satisfying result can be alternatively achieved by using II to V. In this case the harmony is modified a bit.

Another one from bar 18-19

A simple rearrangement of left hand notes to the right hand reduce the difficulty significantly.

Hi Dreamaurora,
Thks for your professional explaination.
This is the powerful of harmony :goodpost:

• RE: Teacher Dreamaurora - Piano Q&A

Hi Dreamaurora,

Eg: Grade 3 Exam Pieces - A2 German Dance In C & C3 - Blue Sky Blue. There are few 1 octave notes need to play together for Bass Clef. Is there any way to let young student to play if their finger are unable to stretches. Or should choose others pieces instead?

Is it means that we can not ommited the third notes of major or minor chord for doubled noted?

Btw, is it possible to elaborate more of "Octaves can often be played as double sixths instead".

Thank you!

• RE: Teacher Dreamaurora - Piano Q&A

Dreamaurora:
Porky Pig:

My Dd is 4.5 years old. She started to learn piano under this teacher since Dec 13. Her teacher commented tat her fingers are so small. Anyway she is so petite of cos her hands and fingers are small. My question is : Will this affect her ability for playing the piano? I noticed her left fingers are weak too.

That will depend on how fast you plan for your DD to progress. If the aim is to reach grade 1 standard by 6 or 7 years old, there should be no issue as most of the pieces are simple in texture and do not require bigger sized hands. If grade 3-5 standard is aimed by 6 or 7 years old, then this will present a significant challenge. The pieces are more complex and there will be bigger stretches such as 7ths and octaves.

So the teacher will need to develop the technique carefully. At very young age this is a big challenge as the kids often do not understand the correlation between good technique and better playing, so the parents play a very important part at home to ensure the technique is practiced correctly. It is very possible to have good strong fingers by 6 or 7 years old with proper technical development plan (yes, play only pieces/songs not enough), but will require good discipline from both the kid and the parents.

Also it will require good skills from the teacher to be able to diagnose technical issues arising from the smaller hands and making adjustments if necessary. For example, this year ABRSM grade 3 pieces contain significant amount of big stretches that make them very difficult to attempt for young kids. But a resourceful teacher will be able to selectively modify the notes in such a way that the musical integrity is not compromised.

Hi Dreamaurora,
Refer the \"But a resourceful teacher will be able to selectively modify the notes in such a way that the musical integrity is not compromised\". Wonder is it possible to share any \"technique\" on selectively modify the notes & at the same time musical integrity in not compromised?

Thank you!
Hi, anyone knows where I can buy past year theory papers for 2007 and 2006?

Usual suspects. Gramercy, Renner Piano, Kinokuniya Orchard, Yamaha, Kawai Music School.

I tried Yamaha, but they only had 2008 onwards. Will try the others.
Hi Waiyean,
You may try Chiu Piano @Thomson Plaza. Tel: 6454-7679.
