volunteer work for children

Don't be offended, but I think it's very sad for those kids in orphanages to see parent-child pairs, ESP if the age of the kids are close to our own. We may intend our children to learn a life lesson of \"see how lucky you are\" but it is at the cost of those left in the orphanages. If the child's age is quite different from the age of the kids at homes, then it is not so bad. ...
I absolutely agree with you. The worst would be for for them to overhear parents telling their child \"See how lucky you are compared to these kids?\"
While the purpose of parents for bringing their children to these missions is to expose them to the harsh realities of life, the mindset must be to, first and foremost, bring joy to the residents. It is through this mindset that we can set examples ourselves to teach compassion to our children. There is no need for us to remind our children how lucky they are. They can infer it themselves. -
Yes, post mortem or case study to be done only after you leave the place…while there, just focus on how to provide an enjoyable time to the residents.

It ever crossed my mind to do volunteer work with my child at an orphanage. I wanted him to appreciate what/who he has. It was only when I share this thought with a friend that I was taught that getting my child to learn should not be at the expense of the others. This person told me how it would hurt the most to see parent-child partner to visit the orphans.
I think a better option to do volunteer work with the children is to go to old folks’ home.
Before I got married, there used to be this volunteer group who will buy staples like rice and bread for the old folks on PA assistance scheme at Chinatown area. Now that my child is old enough, I would really hope to join such groups of volunteer and let my child tag along to help.
If anyone know of such groups, please let me know. -
Anyone knows of any organisation that i could bring my child to the orpanage to do some volunteer work
? -
I’m also interested in this area, anyone can share more infomation? My daughter is turning 2 next month. I wish to bring her along. Although she is still young, but she is quite independent for a 2 yr old child and I hope we can spend our weekends more useful.
She can play with the kids or just accompany me (if the organiser allows) no issues.
Have tried to google online but not much infomation. Hope someone can suggest or have something for us. -

Do take a look at what the forum-ers here have said about being sensitive to the feelings of the kids in the orphanage.
While it's great that you want to groom your child to be a caring member of our community, perhaps you could teach your child to improve our world through other avenues first, e.g. Caring for the environment. There are independent groups that organise litter picking, to show how we can contribute to an environment that we can be proud of.
Volunteer work need not always be about a structured activity- it can be a way of life. There are learning opportunities in everyday life for us to teach our children to be compassionate and considerate. -

thanks for your feedback, i'm not looking for orphanage, that's why I didn't mention any. I'm open to options like old folks, animals, going green, kids with special conditions etc or anything which can get her involved.

Have fun! -
Or how about taking the $5-a-day challenge organised by \"Singaporeans Against Poverty\"? Here's one of the promotional videos on youtube - on a subject close to many of our hearts, entitled \"which enrichment classes?\"
Enjoy
