My DS (P1) is attending DAS ELA programme now, but his English is very poor, especially for comprehension. Although he is very strong in math, but I worry that if he doesnโ€™t have good fundation in English, his math will drop in upper level, as he will not be able to understand the meaning of the question.

I will appreciate if any one can recommend a good patient tutor for P1 English (grammar, comprehension, composition). I prefer small group (2-3 kids).

I have just received this in my email and I am so happy that Lindamood-Bell is finally coming to Singapore to give an introduction.

I just want to share this with any parents, like me, who may be keen to find out more about Lindamood-bell and their ways to help our children.

My DS (P1) has just been diagnosed with dyslexia and the DAS Psychologist said that she will put down in her report to recommend my DS to exempt from MTL and to request for extra time for exam.

I will appreciate that if anyone can share their experiences with me that is it best for my DS to exempt from MTL or need to monitor for a couple of years till P3 or P4? Is there any gauge that what marks to score for each subject to justify for exemption? TIA

Can anyone share how the assessment for dyslexic at DAS like?

My child, just started P1 this year will be going for the assessment soon. She is very shy when comes to stranger. Can a parent sit in during the assessment?

                Thanks in advance.

I was not allowed to sit in but if your child is very reluctant you can ask the tester. I made sure my son had a good sleep and a jacket so he would be comfortable in the aircon room.

The tester will try her best to make the child comfortable and the length of the test depends on the child. If your child has any other issues or have been tested before by ther professionals, let them know beforehand so that they can select what they feel is the most helpful test to build your child's profile and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.

May I know what's next after the assessment?
Do you enrol your child to their remedial proogramme?
I have been searching the web to find out other intervention programme for dyslexic.
But not sure which one is really helpful.

                      Gin:
Hi, just to update those who are interested.

After going for the Davis Dyslexia Correction Program, I have seen some improvement in my DD2's attitude towards learning. She is able to focus on her work and seems to be more confident in what she does. Time taken to do her homework is much shorter. I think she now sees that there is a new way for her to learn and it is indeed a breakthrough. What she could not do for herself a couple of weeks back, like buttoning her clothes, she now does it easily. By the way, she is dyspraxic, of course, with a little dyslexia. Somehow, the training to get the 'Alignment' corrected has done wonders. Of course, we still have lots of follow-up work to do but as long as she knows it is helping her, she gladly gets the work done. DD2 also enjoys the 'work' - clay modeling, Koosh Ball exercises, etc with Mom and Dad.
Although my DD2 never had problem with Spelling, the Davis Method has even helped her cut down the time she needs to master Spelling!

All I can say is that, the Davis Method seems to work for DD2. I have recommended some of my friends to go for the Assessment which costs only $100. It is up to them to try out the Program, if they are keen, that costs $2,500 for 5 full-days. However, if your child cannot complete the course, follow-up can be done even after the 5 days. As for my daughter's case, she did not complete the fourth part of the Program (she was still fearful and clingy at that stage). We shall have a follow-up session in 6 weeks time. I understand that the Davis Program's Policy is 'as long as it takes'.

By the way, my DD2 knows that she is Dyspraxic/Dyslexic. she even tells her friends about it. She is however happier knowing that she learns things in a different manner from the conventional way. she does not see it as a a 'Learning Disability' but a 'Learning Difference'. She knows that mainstream schools tend to go the 'One size fits all' way. Anyway, she is aware that she should not be 'labelled'. Just Different Strokes For Different Folks.

I recommend parents who have kids with Learning Differences read up on as many books as possible. I highly recommended book is 'In Their Own Way'. 'The Gift of Dyslexia' is of course a must read for those who interested in Davis Dyslexia Correction Program, to at least get to know what it is about.

Now that DD2 has been back in school for about 2 weeks, I see a more confident child. She does not have a phobia of writing Compositions anymore. She was (just 2 days ago) able to stand up to her friend who tried to take her pencil case. ๐Ÿ™‚ She never used the school toilet before, but now she does. She pays more attention when we speak with her. She has become more responsible and accountable. Reading is no longer a chore. In fact, she now eagerly looks out for new books to read when we go to the bookstore! Of course, she still loves to play with other kids. But on the whole, My husband and I are happy with the progress made! ๐Ÿ™‚

                      Hi Gin,

Not sure if you will read this post. Hope that you can share about your child's progress 1 year after she has gone through the program.
