may i know more abt JSA? for selection, is it a must that the child is fm school team? cos his school dont have badminton team, only leisure playing.[/quote]Hi jtparent,

I have spoken to Dr Lee, he mentioned that usually the kid has to be recommended by the school team. However, he also mentioned that you can do self-recommendation. JSA only take in kids with age 10 and above.

        Hi everyparent

May I know what is the purpose of getting in Junior Sports Academies? What do they do? Does it helps to get into DSA? Thanks. I am quite interested too as my boy plays golf.

i have 2 kids whom are training under the JSA and YSA scheme

          . JSA - Junior Sports Academy ( Pr5 - P6 )
YSA - Youth Sports Academy ( sec 1 onwards )

both JSA and YSA were formerly known as " Combined Schools " Team , hence , some players still wore the old T-shirt that reads Singapore Schools …
Except that , currently the JSA provided i think 3-4 venues for trainees to train .(In my child’s case - their sport is table tennis )

For a start , they have to be a School Player , the coaches or school will be encouraged to make recomendation by submitting the names .
A trial selection would be conducted and players who have been selected have to go to any of the appointed centres for training .
The aim of JSA is to give a chance to identified talents coming from schools which, do not have strong pool of players, or a conducive training condition to come together to train with the other talented players and receive proper guidance by the much qualified coaches engaged by the MOE .They train 3 times , 7pm to 9 pm / week .
The best of the cohort will be selected under STTA 's Youth Development Squad (YDS) - which offers a minimum of 5 days training , attendents are compulsory . YDS is the feeder to NYT ( National Youth Team ) that may lead to the National Team . My Child was one of the fortunate one.
YDS has a set of training schedules that differs from JSA .
STTA send their YDS players to Taiwan , Korea or China .

While JSA also go for overseas training and competitions mainly in China .
YSA took their Teams to Stockholm , Sweden , both last year and this Oct 2011 .
So you can see it leads to a whole range of programmes …
By far , MOE , STTA had made a lot of effort in grooming our young players in the field of Table Tennis .
Heard it is equally interesting for Badminton , soccer , swimming too
As a Parent , i am happy for the children and thanks to MOE for their efforts.

My child have just received a certificate yesterday , when JSA held its 3rd graduation ceremony for the P6 JSA students at Hwa Chong Institution Hall .

tin4 congrats on your children’s achievements! National players in the making. It is interesting that JSA mainly relies on school and coach recommendations. What happens to those talented kids which schools do not have school teams for the sports which they excel in? They could be learning the sports outside of school. So these will not have a chance to join JSA? My friends have been looking for information for JSA Sep trials becos the schools their kids are in have no school team in their chosen sports but information does not seem easily available. There is a JSA website but information is outdated - dated few years back. Tried calling the above contact Dr Lee no one picks up the phone. Where can we find information on all the trials? Eg table tennis, soccer, bowling? Thanks v much to anyone who can advise.

              Snow crystal,
You go thru' your child's school. We did that. Get to the head of PE dept, he wasn't aware of the procedure much before and I (as a parent) had to convey the information to him. CCAB, which is managing JSA will send the invitation to the schools (including trial information such as date, venue). We just got linked up to go for the trial (gym) via the the PE head which is very supportive though my kid is doing this sport outside school.

              .ky.

You are very resourceful and also very lucky to have a supportive PE head. All the best to your kid's trial!

                    Hi Ontherock,

My son who is in P4 went through the selection trial on Sat, 25 April 15. I heard there is a huge turnout for the selection. They took 4 sessions in 2 days (Maybe more). Was told the result should be out in a month or so. Good luck!

                    😉 :xedfingers:

                      Hi hopeful mum,

When I was waiting for my boy there, i happened to chat with the person in charge of the JSA, total turnout was 4000 and only 10% will be selected. Result will be out on 10th May but JSA will directly inform the respective Sch, from there then the sch will inform those selected. So most probably ard end May.

Good luck to ue younger son. Cheers
