Maybe you could start by introducing yourself first as there are too many newbies in this forum who suddenly appear out of nowhere, vouching for certain tuition centres. And strangely, these newbies 'disappear' when parents start to probe.

Ya, u right! I have noticed that too. A lot of newbies vouching for certain centre, after that vanished into thin air![/quote]

It's highly suspicious. Seems like there are \"testimonial task forces\" moving around the forum.

I returned to this forum today and I’m honestly shocked by these accusations! My friend who had recommended me and her sister (who is a p6 english teacher in a pri school here) owned three tuition centres but she has high regards for Joanne Choo Language Centre as her own son has benefited a lot from the centre and is now in uni. She doesn’t bother to find out what Mrs Choo’s teaching methods are but trusts her tutors’ teaching in her own centres. They all have their own way of teaching. She does not go around accusing other centres like this! Hm, there’s no need to put another centre down. My own children are still having lessons at Joanne Choo. My eldest son is even top of the whole level now (fri night class) and my younger son has also improved (fri afternoon). Also, if my oldest son is coming back with many mistakes in the essay, I sincerely doubt that it’s just copying! Otherwise, why would he have mistakes? So does my younger boy. There are always mistakes in their books. Honestly, just copying would not be like this!

I spoke to a sec student who attended JC and he confirmed tat he copied essay

during lessons and the class size is really big. Another parent
Whose kid had arrended the pri tuition at JC also rokd me tat JC spoke
abt religion in her classes. So they left the centre after attending a few lessons.

            Hi,

all I read from those good testimonials from here are just improvements and improvements, but nobody has answered how the class was taught. I called up personally and a male reception answered. He could not or refuse to tell me how the class is conducted, simply said that all their students are recommended and they are the track records. He kept asking me how I get to know about and I must have called because someone recommended me. I called because I travel pass the centre everyday and came here to find out about the feedback. He also told me that P3 and P4 will be in the same class and there is no limit to the class size. I was also told there will no opportunity for me to speak to Joanne Choo herself as she is very busy. I wonder how can an unlimited class size with 2 levels help a child improve his creative writing. Also how can I know what’s is the main weakness or strength of my child if I cannot speak to the teacher herself. Since there is someone who had attended the class and parents of children who attend the class, could you do a favour to explain how the class is conducted and do you get to speak to Ms Joanne Choo herself?

              Hi,

Let me share my true experience with all of you, my son is currently P6 and he has regular English tuition. I enrolled in JC because I wanted him to improve in his composition, thus, I enrolled for the Paper 1 in July this year. I thought this extra lesson might give him some ideas/learn new vocabulary for compo but guess what happened. For the past 4 lessons, he basically copied essays and Oral passages. My son felt that it doesn’t helped him and also the class size is more than 30 students with P5/P6 combined together. I called up the centre and told them that my son is not suitable in this type of learning, I also shared with the teacher, Mrs Choo that it may be suitable for other children but definitely not my son. To my disbelief, she argued and told me that my son has pride in him that he doesn’t like to copy and this is the way of learning and told me all the "old grandmother stories" that she has many years of proven track records. DB, thru my conversation with her, I never, ever mentioned that her approaches are no good but she kept saying that it’s the student’s problem. The class size is so big that she can’t even remembered that she didn’t even marked my son’s work as I told her that it is purely copied which she argued that the essay that were flashed on the screen has some blanks and the student has to filled it in (basically the blank are 10% of the total essay) and submit for marking but for 4 lessons, nobody has ever asked my DS to submit in the copied essays (guess the teacher herself can’t even remembered that she has a new student). Her lessons are planned back to back and basically you have no time to even talk to the teachers. She even tell me off " if your son doesn’t like than finished the 8 lessons and no need to come" why, 8 lessons? Let me explained, because the centre has no "trial lesson" you must pay one month deposit, if you don’t like you have to give one month notice period. I really can’t believe a teacher has no basic manners/EQ talking to parents. Maybe by copying essays does work but definitely no creativity and you can do it at home.

                    Hi all,

What Sabby says is true. I have just started sending my gal there.
There are indeed about 30 kids in the class.
My gal told me that the passage is flashed on the board and there are blanks to fill in.
So far, she has done two passages and they do come back marked.
The notable phrases are then bracketed.
For eg, in the recent passage, there was a phrase ‘Natural sense of curiosity’ and that was bracketed.
I suppose parents are then expected to go hom and revise with the child.
I don’t know if this method works but since the earlier comments were so good, am willing to give it a try.

But I have to add that my gal doesn’t like the place. Complained that it is noisy and the boys were rowdy.

As for JC herself, I have no problem. She was actually quite welcoming to my gal.

Sorry but to add on, the work is handed in at the end of each lesson.

So far, my gal has gotten it back all marked.

I deliberately let her have two exercise books. So that when she hands in one, she can bring back the other for my inspection.

Any other parents who have tried this centre, please share.
