Which school to choose?

1. Seng Kang Sec (172)
My child scored 164 and allowed selection for NA. However there are not many to select and in fact, we have none near our place to choose from (Punggol)...
2. Punggol Sec (170)
3. Hougang Sec (167)
4. Montford (164)
5. Serangoon Secondary School (157)
6. Yuying Secondary School (152) or Pei Cai (152)
In parentheses are last year’s COP.
Clearly, you don’t need 6 choices to make a selection. Nonetheless, the first 3 choices above are hopeful (because you never know), the 4th is possible while number 5 and 6 are guaranteed. -

By the way, if you are willing to consider schools out of the Punggol / SK / Hougang area, you should list Ang Mo Kio (168) down as one of your choice, in place of one of these schools: Seng Kang Sec / Punggol Sec / Hougang Sec.

It just came to my mind if i put the schools with a minimum cut off points that are so much higher than my kid, will i be risking his chances for montford or serangoon secondary?
Also i went to the open house for both montford and serangoon secondary but can’t seem to decide which is a better fit for my kid
Any idea how to select?
Also i can’t seem to find reviews on serangoon secondary, serangoon garden etc.
In fact, it seems these schools are not easily accessible from Punggol except for serangoon secondary. -

In the current t-score system, posting is by merit. As long as the previous suggestion of 4th to 6th choice of Montfort, Serangoon and Peicai is intact, you are pretty safe. You can try to aim higher for the first 3 choices since NA COP can fluctuate quite a bit.

Fit is really a personal matter. It depends on what you are looking out for. Example, boys school tend to be a little more rowdy, some kids may not like it or do well in that kind of environment. Some people may look out for CCA. Example Montfort used to have a strong rugby team (though it’s currently under threat of being shut down). Lastly, others do look out for schools (example Ang Mo Kio) with historically good academic results (relatively speaking) hoping that their kids can be spurred on to do better in N / O - although some kids who struggle to keep up with their peers may give up if they are demoralized.
Unfortunately, Singaporeans are pragmatic but egoistic people. They will only provide reviews for top to above average schools, since few will readily acknowledge that their wards are attending the less popular schools. Ultimately, Open House is your best bet of getting a feel about the schools that you are eyeing. -
Thanks, floppy. It's very much appreciated. I've clearer view now. 😊
