DSA 2023
-
RI implemented GAP day every week where there is no official lesson. They have their own good reasons for doing that. As the principal mention in news, their students are highly motivated so will make good use of the time to so something useful/meaningful. But I am sure Among the cohort there are less motivated kids as well. So if there is any apparent drop in their results now or in the future,this could be one factor? I cannot analyse those results so technically as I kind of believe that my child could be the only one scoring full 90 RP in a lower-tier JC or the one scoring 60 in RI/HCI. Statistics are meant for the school to Analyse cohort performance, but I only have 1/2 children…

Regarding DSA, I do wish schools would publish or make known exactly (or at least roughly, if the coaches are going to haggle among themselves later on) how many slots are available for each domain.
We had such transparency during Sec 1 CCA trials, which was very welcome. The boys were told from the start that there were (for example) only 9 slots available in the Badminton school team (entire Sec 1 cohort being 320 boys, not excluding those who already DSAed in), and no recreational team would be available. Those who decided they still wanted to apply for the trials did so at their own daring, ready to be trashed by the Sec 2 school team boys.
If parents likewise knew the odds for DSA, easier to manage expectations. -

If RI intake is 800 IP + 400 JAE but only left 1,126 taking A levels with them, that’s 6% of the cohort who could have quietly exited RI (for whatever reasons). And with a passing rate of 98%, 2% couldn’t clear A levels. That’s like 8% altogether. How to read and interpret this metric?
For those that are interested in the cohort sizes (without regard to whether either school or policy is better), I found the following for RI number of students that took the A Level:
2022 = 1,126
2021 = 1,175
2020 = ?
2019 = 1,272
2018 = 1,190 (forum text, not from actual release)
2017 = 1,172
2016 = 1,186
Maybe 2019 and 2022 are both odd years (in opposite directions, for whatever reasons), and a bit under 1,200 is about normal? This would imply about 800 IPs (most continuing all the way through) + about 400 JAEs.
Again, purpose is for information only as to whether the difference in cohort sizes is a) 1,000 vs. 1,200 or larger or b) 50 - 100, as both have been thrown out by friendly participants. No conclusions or implications drawn. -

My understanding is students use that Gap day (for year 5 onwards only every Wednesday) to do CCA or catch up school works too: watch online lesson videos. The principal mentioned before , after the GAP day started in 2020, subsequent A level results not much different compare prior Gap day implementation. That was before 2022 A level result announcement

The 6% exit could be during RI (j /girls) y1 to 4 Transfer out (O level or overseas study)? I remember the National IP drop off rate is 6% too

It seemed like there were consolidating of resources in 2019. River valley high and Dunman high started accepting JAE students. A few mergers of JC in 2019 too. Was there increase of hci intake in 2019 too? -

Just sharing, not meant to side and top jc.
Friend’s boy entered HCI via DSA sports. Only had 230+ at psle.
Scored 3As, released on 17 Feb 2923. But GP and Econs suffered. Still i personally think he did beyond our expectations getting 83rp, sch played a big part, friends in sch too. Are there such cases we know from RI?
But if kid is selfdriven and ambitious, RI would be a playground to value add, can build portfolio to score overseas ivy league scholarship.
Depends on which type of kid. -
I kind of agree with a parent here, to know which type of kid our kids are, we can just see what they choose to do on a free day.
I know of one sec 4 boy last yr, he roam into a uni forum to discuss and learn uni physics with students and professor and he is in o level stream.
