      HCI subject grading follows the O level system of A1 to F9. In comparison, HCI has a more stringent promotion criteria for Y2 to Y3. One has to attain mean average grade (MSG) of 4.0 for promotion to Y3 structured IP programme (preparation for O level exam) and 3.0 for normal IP (direct to HCJC). It would thus appear that HCI is more stringent than RGS in terms of progression to JC.

      I'm trying to understand the grading system.
      Does a MSG 4.0 means an average of B4 for all subjects?
      Does it mean that anything below that, ie, average C5 will be retained? Or are they advised to transfer out since these kids would have been promoted if they are in normal O track?

      Recalled during HCI talks that kids who didn't make the cut will be transferred to a SIP (?) class - ie the O level track. According to the school, time spent here will usually wake the child up and there are cases where kids revert back to the IP track after spending time in this SIP. However, kids will not return to their former classes - they will stay with their SIP classes (me thinks it's those who qualify to go back) - so if someone from iSpark went to SIP, he will not return to iSpark.

        But the above stated that they still need a MSG of 4 to get into SIP which I thought is still pretty high. So what will happen to anyone doing worse than that.

          I googled and found a document introducing SIP…seems anything lousier than 3.0 will send the child to SIP. it’s not something anyone will want because one is being taken out from IP. to get out of this class, the child will have to site better than Msg3.0. (the old system had cut off 4.0). so anyone not making that mark will go to SIP.

            It is not exactly lousier than 3.0, but still have to be better than 4.0. I have downloaded the Y3 programme options presentation slides from the HCI parents website. Some details below:
            For promotion to Sec 3: MSG<4.0
            For qualification to IP: MSG<=3.0
            For MSG<=2.0, qualifies for CSE (Centre for Scholastic Excellence) programme

            The SIP (O level track) option at the end of Sec 3:

            The Sec 4Q classes will sit for the O level exams and I think there are 2 classes in HCI for this year Sec 4 cohort.

              Comparing RGS vs HCI promotion criteria, RGS seems less stringent and allows one to have more time to focus back on studies. The flip side could be nasty surprise at the A level.

              HCI only allow the boys to have honeymoon for 1 year and must pull up their socks by end of Y2. This is my biggest concern for my DS. The Y1 EOY results are not out yet but to attain MSG of 6 should not be a problem. For Y2 to Y3 promotion, if he get in the range of 4.0 to 6.0, he still attain more than 50% mark (pass in general sense) but will not get promoted. I guess he will have to transfer to mainstream school in that case vs repeating for Y2.

                Hmm, think check with the school. I’m not sure anyone was retained in year 2 last year. i think while you’re not "promoted", you will be "advanced" to Sec 3 SIP if your MSG >4.

                  Hi ACTC,

                  Thanks so much for sharing the details although frankly I am still quite confused what it means to the boys directly. All the best to your boy and hope he enjoys his time in HCI.
