Comparing RGS vs HCI promotion criteria, RGS seems less stringent and allows one to have more time to focus back on studies. The flip side could be nasty surprise at the A level.


HCI only allow the boys to have honeymoon for 1 year and must pull up their socks by end of Y2. This is my biggest concern for my DS. The Y1 EOY results are not out yet but to attain MSG of 6 should not be a problem. For Y2 to Y3 promotion, if he get in the range of 4.0 to 6.0, he still attain more than 50% mark (pass in general sense) but will not get promoted. I guess he will have to transfer to mainstream school in that case vs repeating for Y2.

It certainly looks like a cause for concern if your son's is only getting a MSG of 6 in Y1.
Promotion aside, even if the difficulty level of HCI is 2 grades higher and he would be getting a MSG of 4 if not in HCI, isn't it like 24 pts for L1R5?
As we all know it gets more difficult to better your score when you get into upper sec, wouldn't it be too demanding for him to continue on the A level track?

Yes, as parents it is really painful to see him becoming rebellious and reclusive. We are considering transferring him to a mainstream school. Told him to seriously consider himself and will arrange to speak to the consortium director for his opinion as well. Some background about my DS: he was not among the top 10% in P5 and P6 in his primary school. Somehow in PSLE, he was among the top 10 in his school and qualified for HCI. He expressed his concern but we thought he would overcome as his sister did in RGS where she needed to appeal to get in. Looking back, that was a bad decision on our part to put him in HCI.

I think it shouldn't matter that much even if he wasn't in the top 10% in pri school. Doing well in PSle shows that he is actually capable and competent in his work. There are probably some underlying issues that caused his performance to drop that much.
Could it be low self esteem, or the lack of self belief...like he is grouped with kids who can pick up really fast and he always appeared lost?
Or he's feeling insecure coz lack of friends or unable to get along with others?
Since you mentioned 'rebellious' and 'reclusive', I'm not sure if a change in school would help. Perhaps the consortium director can help with some counselling.

He may feel that his PSLE results were a fluke? And if he finds himself struggling to keep up, it may the cause of his becoming rebellious nd reclusive (due to stress and unhappiness). If he wants to go somewhere less challenging next year, I think you should consider it seriously.

Anyone knows about HSP(humanities scholarship programme) or the likes being offered to year 3 and 4 students in IP schools? What is it about? Is it to prepare them better for the MOE selection to the actual HSP? Is it time-consuming? My DD has been selected to do HSP and we wonder if it’ll take up time in her already very full schedule.
