I was keen cos of the hours - suit our needs. But abit disappointed when learnt that it's of a Christian setup, so no matter how well the hours suited us, if the children are expected to learn about the religion(which is diffnt from ours) n etc, we'd rather opt out. Not hard-fast about gg to the school, just want to find out more, that's all.

I think at kindy level it is more 'churchy' than in primary school

            Dear greenbean2011,

Happy new year to you to! :celebrate:

N thanks for helping me ask, you're really very nice! ๐Ÿ˜„

It's nice that the transport uncle does come all the way to sembawang, but my issue is really the time my DD will have to commute..

last year, my DH was really keen on Marymount, but the 1 hour bus journey was a turn-off... so we chose a church kindy that's only 10 min via bus. Of course, it's quite an average one, not as recommended as Marymount or Newton.

To date, whenever she's ill or what, she'll happily stay at home.. not that she detests school, but she is just apathetic to it! I don't see that with kids from Marymount or Newton (at least from what their mummies share here)...

Anyhow, will definitely keep Newton on the radar should we feel that the time/distance is not that significant a factor as compared to the education. As it is, DH is feeling disenchanted a little with the school cos of several lapses of security check and responsibility of teachers, though the school has listened to our concerns and tried to work on them. Sigh, so different from the reviews about Newton!

            Thank you very much! ๐Ÿ˜„

school bus journey / time could be positive interaction time and picking up socialising skills for the kids. positive thinking

                hello mum05,

actually, there are also a number of parents in Newton kindy who are not Christians. They come from different walks of faith. They may be Buddhists, Taoists, free thinkers, etc. Just that they happen to like Newton kindy environment, so they enrol their kids here.

same thing also happen in Primary schools.

even in schools like ACS primary, St Andrewโ€™s primary, MGS primary, CHIJ Toa Payoh primary, Catholic High primary, Maris Stella primary - doesnโ€™t mean that all parents with kids enrolled there are - 100% Christians or 100% Catholics. Parents come from all different walks of faith. Itโ€™s just that they happen to like that particular primary school, like the schoolโ€™s education system, like the schoolโ€™s culture, so they enrol their child in there to study.

anyway, kindergarten kids all so young.
preaching of religion is banned in kindergarten setting.

in most church kindergarten, kids only pray before makan time. To give Thanks because today they are blessed. Blessed because today got food laid on the table before them !

at Newton, children go Assembly hall to listen to bible stories. why ? so that children can learn important character values system, from these bible stories. After hearing, after learning, then kids can apply these useful character values into their personal life.

Character is very important in a person.
It is the basic, fundamental building block in a person.
Because the line between doing good things or doing wicked bad things in life โ€ฆ is very thin.

if a person is unscrupulous, without proper character guidance in his early stage of his life, then no matter how academically brillant the child is, it is very sad when he grow up, and go over the wrong side of the law.

you may refer page 2 on character moral education development part, on this thread.

you may also pay the school a visit, or talk to Principal, to clear up any doubts that you have. Perhaps Principal may advise you things from a different angle, from different perspective, which we never think about before ?

once your doubts are clarified, then you can make a clearer, wiser decision - if you want to give Newton a try, or try somewhere else !

important thing is - you must have peace in your heart.
The peace that surpass all understanding in your heart, is the light at the end of a dark tunnel, leading you towards making correct, wise decision making. All of us need wisdom in life - guided by Almighty from above !

all the best to you, your beloved child and yr family !
from the bottom of my heart, I wish you a blessed new 2011!

                    Agree!

I see much wisdom in greenbean2011 and her replies. Also a very hardworking mum who is able to evaluate all these kindies so well!

Without greenbean2011 'kicking my ass' to register my son at MMK quickly last year, I might jolly well have missed it and I shudder to think about the consequences. I was only but days away from missing out on the last few vacancies at MMK!

                    So thanks greenbean2011, kee...hee...hee!

                      Hi lil jade,

My boy didn't want to go sch and he was previously from MMK, so I dun think I highly recommended MMK.haha.

But of coz if ur child enjoy going to sch, then that's good. I regretted never listen to him. Because now, he prefers not to go school also and he is in primary school now. ๐Ÿ˜ž

ya but I know most church schools require the children to pray... and tt's not viable for non-christian children. that's why I wanna find out first before proceeding as we're not christians.

they can't force you if you make it known

but honestly i wonder why non-Christian should be interested in a church-run kindergarten ? sorry if i am being insensitive

I reckon its because not all religious groups as well as/or non-christians classify themselves as exclusive.

                        Just to share that ....

I am not christian but my DS is enrolled in a church kindy.

I am absolutely fine with the inculcation of Bible story telling sessions, singing of hymns and the fact that he is being taught to say grace before meals etc ...

I appreciate the values being imparted and regard this aspect of his education positively.
