they usually do assessment based on age which i’m uncomfortable with… being 6yrs old… they would suggest that he attend the advance stage as most of the kids that age are there… wonder if there are classes with smaller groups to tackle only english…

when my dd was in k2, I was also as worry as you..so I decided not to rely on her kindergarden teacher but went to buy good phonics set(with books and CD) to teach my dd every Saturday..and it works!..I am very proud of myself whenever my dd told others tt her phonics is told by me 😉 ..

Another important thing to do is to bring her to library weekly..and read to her/him story there..get the kid to love reading books..And once the kid has master her phonics, she will not have problem reading story book herself 🕺

        Hi vlim,

do you hav the title of the phonics set?? i'm a idiot in phonics..

Have you tried Zoo-phonics? They helped my friend’s kid when she was in K2. She also struggled to read.

Vlim: Thanks… is it easy to coach using the series? Looking forward to your updates on the title…

quirkymum: DS sch happens to implement it but i still find him weak… he can’t do rearranging of word into a sentence… occasionally difficulties in reading…

Does your child have any enrichment in reading now? Maybe he needs one, for me, I left the reading part to my mother in law who would bring my kids to the library and borrow books for them. She started on Peter and Jane but they soon got bored. So, she started getting them to read Usborne Young Readers series and it helped.

A few enrichment centres that I hear are good from friends and family for reading are: I Can Read, Zoo-phonics and Lorna Whiston

                      Hi e3nity,
The title of the phonics set is called ' hooked on phonics'.. They have kindergarten series, grade 1 and grade 2 series... One set(series) cost about $110+ and I bought it abt 4 yrs ago at kinokuniya.. It consist of flash cards, CDs, workbook and simple story books... I find it very effective but of course got to follow their program seriously... To me, going through the kindergarten series is good enough to set a good phonics foundation... But don't know u are able to get it now or not since I bought 4 yrs ago 😉
