Oh dear! Spelling tests on 2nd week of pri 1? The presch that i’m going to enrol DD1 in has no spelling tests and don’t teach HYPY. They told me their graduates has no problem coping with Pri 1.

Ya, i'm quite surprised. However, the words in the spelling list are quite simple. With adequate practice should hv full mark in English. Mostly, 10 each for English and Chinese (now in HYPY) respectively on weekly basis.

I heard of K2 being asked to spell 'omnivores' in first spelling (heard is under PCF enrichment programme) but my son P1 first spelling ask him to spell 'he'. 🙂

HYPY is important for schools not offering higher Chinese in lower primary. First term, many words are in HYPY. Even for 造句 is all in HYPY. I had some hard time interpreting though the children are kind of expert in this. 🙂

Wah! That's quite a difficult word. When my ds1 was in K2, I vaguely rem that his spelling were quite alright n 'peactixal' words... Meaning the teacher was trying to teach them how to read 'instructions' for qns: so it was words like 'Draw' / 'Pick up'/ 'Fill in'/ 'Blanks'/ 'Different' etc.

i think this type of spelling list is good and useful.
my boy's spelling words were more like listening compre style.
we were given a list of what will be tested eg for one of the spelling -ig, -in, -ip, -it ; then the teacher will say out 5 words (1 from each category and 1 more with 'sp', 'sh' these type of 2 letters in front) and the kid writes out. very easy but have to listen intently.

My son’s kindy doesn’t seem to have spelling and hanyu pinyin…not as rigorous in its academic preparation for P1…so was very worried initially, coz we’re registering son in a SAP school. Pressed the panic button and contemplated transferring him out but decided to let him stay because of the good school environment and teachers…I guess the school’s focus is on making learning fun and character development.

I have recently enrolled son in a EL reading programme and Chinese Berries. I try to reinforce what’s he’s learnt in school and enrichment classes. Getting son to write in Chinese is a real pain so I’m trying to let him enjoy the exposure to the language first through children’s songs…my family and I are English speaking and I’m the only one who attempts to interact with him in Mandarin (confession: about 15 mins a day only!!). With regard to spelling, I will start giving him my own simple spelling tests on common sight words and consonant blends after he’s more confident in his phonemic awareness.

From the earlier posts I’ve read…many spelling words that the kids are forced to learn don’t serve any real purpose and add a lot of stress, like what some parents mentioned. Plus, I really feel the words should be age appropriate. Scientific 3, 4 syllabi words should be taught at primary 2 and in context. Even if the kids are supersmart, there is a danger that by the time they enter primary school they become bored and will switch off.

Just my personal thoughts. Btw, can kind parents share what they do at home to teach their kindy-age kids even while taking care of their younger ones?
