JEI/PSLE Math - Discussion
-
i went to marine parade br to see the materials. both jei/psle math (ie prob sum) wkshets are at the counter. they quite transparent wif their materials.
for p3, 2hr program is $485 for 12 lessons, ie ard $40 each 2hr session
some centres eg perceptum alrdy charge $45 for 2hr session and their class size is 12. jei max size is 6
enopi, mpm, already $35 a lesson and its only presch level. plus only 1hr 15-30min, and they dont do prob sums. jei/psle is 2hr.
jei/psle is gd cos combined basic math (jei bklet) with problem sums that can include heuristic/olympiad questions . so no need to go separate courses eg basic + advanced.
they create own wkshet for prob sum so u can customise the questions if there are enuf parents who own certain kind of questions covered in their wkshets.
just math is 88 a mth, mindstretcher ard 120-130
but materials are not the same. jei materials are colored
and small class size is impt for math cos everyone’s weakness differ. -
acc to jason the prog director, their teacher will mark the prob sums in a few colors. eg the first attempt if wrong, will be highlighted in yellow.
if wrong again, highlighted in orange. this is to help revision, ie revise only questions that always wrong, not all kinds cos u dont hv so much time do all. waste time too.
their amk br may be cheaper but hvnt open, so the cost not out yet -

Thanks! This marking system is interesting and make sense! I will drop in tomorrow to check it out. I will provide more feedback. -
i hvnt enrol. my feedback is based on wat i had gathered frm talking to jason n the materials
he emailed me one jei bklet sample, they hv questions such as
10- __=3. this is same as p1 syllabus.
this type i hvnt seen in enopi or mpm (but my kids were on mpm or enopi for long period also, so maybe i m wrong)
if u do go down, better make appt first with jason.

dont know if got referal prog or not but sibling got disc.
amk br is supp to be cheaper due to the location (blk 163)
after my girl’s ca test, i will bring her for a free trial. they are closed on thu and mon.
if she is ok wf me, i wld prob enrol when the amk br opens in end mar or apr cos marine parde too far for me, -
just to add, enopi also dont allow the parents to keep the (colored) wkbks.
it was fine as a kickstart - my boy did become able to do basic addition/subtraction after a few mths - i really cant teach him at hm cos he doesnt like to study.
after half a year i find its really like kumon - but in a colored format.
it was fine until they kept repeating the bklet even tho most of the time my boy get just 2-3 mistakes at most. i find it a waste of money to repeat the bklets when my boy can already do rather fast. repeating 1 digit addition. if i spend 35 a lesson, i might as well just buy kumon addition bk from popular and drill him at hm. enopi doesnt cover time n $
so i decided to switch to mpm for a try.
but lately i chanced upon jei in this forum and found the jei bklets more much intensive - the questions are harder and more questions per page compared to enopi.
mpm is quite a different story. the questions are quite simple for some but posed creatively. but some questions i really duno what are they testing on., except may its visual training, eg count how many yellow symbols in the pic, then how many green.
its all topics lumped together cos its spiral. -
I dropped MPM and joined PSLE Math programme in Bangkit Road branch since last year.
If you are lookin for math enrichment, yes MPM probably a better choice. If you are looking for relevance, PSLE Math will certainly be the better choice.
The choice for me was obvious

Hi Saralim,Hi Sydney/24hr-mum,
I have a P2 girl. She find math difficult and I am worried she will grow to hate the subject. I did some surfing and notice your conversation.
Before I make a trip to Marine Parade, hope I can hear your opinion about their programme since both of you have seen their workbooks and spoken to them.
Do they do hard selling like some tuition school?
Thanks!
They don't hard sell. The people there are passionate about the programme and would make effort to explain to you in details. Jason at Marine Parade would probably be the best person to share with you. Make an appointment with him. Ask him for a free trial he will likely obliged if timing fits.
I strongly suggest you make a visit to the centre to view the materials and ask him all the hard questions

jason teaches only at marine parade.
the amk teacher is rebecca and yuting.
i think the branches are all franchises
but the materials and culture is the same.
in fact amk can be cheaper but the cost isnt out yet.
