JEI/PSLE Math - Discussion

amk centre opening in late mar or early apr, acc to rebecca the franchisee, at amk blk 163 (the mkt near st nics )
u can go to jei at marine parade first to chk the materials n talk to jason.
onsponge is purely a tuition centre that uses onsponge methodology, for prob sums. p3 is $180 for 4 sessions, 1.5hrs i think. hvnt tried so not sure what is the difference. but jei/psle math is 1 hr JEI - foundation math (something like mpm or enopi) and 1 hr problem sums whch they term it psle prog. i guess 2hr more value for $??
i hvnt tried both but i know mpm n enopi a bit
jei is for n2 onwards, psle prob sum is p2 onwards. ie p2 onwards do both programmes as 1 integrated 2hr course. -
I am also looking for a Maths centre for my P3 girl. She dislikes Maths and got a band 2 for her Maths last year. I’ve tried MPM when she’s in P1 but switched to 1-to-1 with a private tutor, and still no improvement in her Maths.
She’s gone thru MPM so I roughly know what JEI is about. How about the plse maths part? Do they conduct lessons or the students are only given booklets to work on and the teacher will help and guide them when the student can’t solve the problems?
I’m also staying in Bishan, so I’ll prob. wait for the AMK branch to open and sign up for a trial lesson 1st. -
i m not sure if the jei/psle centre does teach but they are given similar problems to work on.
can always do a free trial at the marine parade branch first.
my girl now with Just iMaths bishan. started only 1 mth ago but it was all revision mth. proper teaching only starting this wk so cant tell much but i m keen to try the jei/psle math at marine parade first and switch to amk br later maybe.
i also considered onsponge whc is 180 a mth and at some shophse along longhse area. hvnt decided whc is the best.[/i] -

At P3, its wise to switch out and consider a centre that do Singapore base syllabus. MPM, Kumon and also JEI, they are not Singapore primary school focus. They are only good for arithematic training. These days in Singapore Math is more about analysis and very lesser about computation.I am also looking for a Maths centre for my P3 girl. She dislikes Maths and got a band 2 for her Maths last year. In JEI, There are two part. One is JEI Math and the other is PSLE Math. For PSLE Math the focus is on problems solving skills. There is teaching involved. -

Thanks for your response. I am also exploring Onsponge, but I think their focus is only on problem sum solving but my girl would need help in a wider spectrum, she's quite weak in her maths foundation.i m not sure if the jei/psle centre does teach but they are given similar problems to work on.

Thanks. Yes, I took her out of MPM and had switched to 1-to-1 private tuition. But with my girl's weak maths foundation, was thinking since this centre covers both, may be good to try them out.

ya, if the child is weak in foundation, enopi or mpm will help but not enuf cos lacking in heuristics / prob sum. unless u go for both
hence i thnk jei/psle will be gd as it integrates both. -
my girl went for the trial at JEI/PSLE and likes the class, so will do the switch from her current centre to JEI/PSLE.
looking at the materials for the JEI part, I feel they are much better than enopi or mpm as they are very intensive (looks like 15-20pgs), colorful and a few questions on each page, pictorial yet very relevant to spore syllabus. and the best part is u can bring the materials home, unlike enopi or mpm
for psle math its purely problem sums (cos the basic math is under the JEI bklet) and incorporates heuristics sums. so i think its pretty gd. why pay a centre to do basic math if we can buy assessment bks to do ourselves. in this aspect i think its gd becos if we choose a centre that does only prob sums, we scared the basics are ignored. for this centre, it covers both, wf greater emphasis on prob sums. i believe if cant finish the jei bklet, can bring home to do. -
They also do regular diagnostic test and can adjust the bklets accordingly, acc to them. so they wont force u to finish the bklets by sequence unlike mpm or enopi. this part i will clarify again but i think it is so becos jason mentioned that sometimes the kids learn faster than their centre becos parents teach at home too. so they can adjust the pace.
