      Just to share my experience.

DS has all along been pretty independent in his studies so I hardly check his work. His Science from 80s (P3) >> 70s (P4), so I started him with Sci tuition in P5....he maintained 80s (P5&P6). Tho I gave him assessment & top sch exam papers, I haven't been diligently marking them.
I was blissfully ignorant until Prelim #1&2, DS shocked me with 19/40 & ~22/40 in his OE. I looked thru' & realised he gave horrible answers. As I dun know the proper OE answering technique....I was lost!! Most of the time it was guesswork on my part based on whatever concept I can still remember, & we only do it verbally. Top sch exam papers answer keys were not helpful. It didn't help when DS would argue with me that his answers were sufficient.

Desperate, I bought Janet Sim's Upper Block Challenging Exam Papers just ~1 week b4 PSLE 2012 Sci paper. Based on the BOLD keywords and the marks allocation, got DS to try out the OE and explained to him based on the answer key. With that book, DS was more receptive. 😓 We tried a few top sch papers and he seemed to fare better as he started to elaborate/give reason on his answers. (I hope lah)

It was last minute on my part  :stupid: :gloomy: but I guess, can't be helped liao. Just hope for the best for his PSLE.

If you can teach, by all means go by whichever method/book/papers.
For me, actually I had some other guide books but they were without the bold keywords and marks allocation, so I was still lost. However, with Janet's answer key, I believed it helped me. At least now I think I can tackle & interpret the various answer-key better 🙂

wow :yikes: seems like this is a 神奇书!!! Must get for PSLE science

      No no. Not a 神奇书.
For the clueless like me who dun know how to mark or how many marks are allocated, I think it may help ESP when time was so tight in my case. For those who have been following their kids' progress, know which are the keyword etc, it may not be as useful to them.

Anyone got the Janet’s books photo? Would like to get it.

Edit: Just saw the book cover in earlier page.

          BeContented,

I don’t understand. You ds had been performing for his science paper, why in prelims, there’s a drop? If his teacher accepted his answers during the usual tests, why did the teacher penalise during prelims?

          Thanks.

Think in the past, papers were always easy (that's why I always feel, easy papers cause complacency & false sense of achievements). Questions were direct hence answers were quite straight forward. But for prelims Science, DS commented more difficult than usual - all these years, except for Chinese, DS hardly find any paper difficult, usually ok or easy. Marking seemingly was stricter too (water level 'lesser' considered wrong totally, must use 'lower'). Personally I'm glad it was a more difficult paper cos it woke ME up

Honestly, I am still not sure if DS has the right answering technique (should have some lah) but what's done cannot be undone. I just hope he will still be able to achieve an 'A' in PSLE. 😓

I think the school must revise its strategy. :siam:

:skeptical: dun think can expect much from neighborhood Sch with only 40+% going to express stream each year & <10 students scoring above t-score 250.....
No matter how well DS is doing, we can only hope so much realistically based on historical trend.

Hi, my girl is tested on variables on science experiment. Any guide book to recommend on this topic? She is very weak and not sure about which variable must remain unchanged and what can be change.

Hi!.. would like to chk if anyone has used the following Science Guide Books for LOWER BLOCK before and have any comments :

                    1) Everything you need to know about Science (EPH - by Patricia Chan)
                    2) Ultimate Science Guide Book (EPH - by Low Wai Cheng…)
                    3) Science EXAM Booster Notes (EPH - by Carol Phua)
                    4) My pals are here - Science Booster Volume A (Marshall)

I was thinking of getting just 1 relevant, user friendly guide book to coach my kid (and myself!) at home but pretty clueless which to get…
I find (4) looks the most "friendly" in terms of the layout but the pricetag is also very "friendly" as compared to the rest…

Hi, my dd will be in P3 next year. Wanted to know if it’s a must or it’s usefu to get the "Mini Science Encyclopedia (6th Edition)"? Anyone can advise? It is in her school list which is optional. Thanks.
