hi bigsnoopy,

I think so, saw in his text book something about multiplication (the lower set of numbers).

In P1 2nd half, kids will be exposed to multiplication, though they do not learn the timetables. They will be taught as 2 sets with 3 balls in each set = 6 balls altogether.

oh.. means no need to memorise the multiplication table.
Still need to memorise, the above method is just a concept and will be too slow to appy it during exams. You can ask your kid to memorise it now,may be through song.

Yes, now the multiplication table will be need to apply at the P2 stage. Some school may start even as early as P1. So we can ask them to memorise bit by bit so they will not be stress out at the later stage.

Primary 1
Multiplication and division
Include:
•
multiplication as repeated addition (within 40),
•
use of the multiplication symbol (×) to write a mathematical statement for a given situation,
•
division of a quantity (not greater than 20) into equal sets:
∗ given the number of objects in each set,
∗ given the number of sets,
•
solving 1-step word problems with pictorial representation.
Exclude:
•
use of multiplication tables,
•
use of the division symbol (÷).

Hi,
I extract the above from the MOE website; hope it clears some doubts regarding of multiplication & division in Primary One 😄

So far for 1st half of year, no multiplication and division. I've checked with my kid's teacher and she said they will be taught \"groupings\" (groups of 2, 3 4) in 2nd half.

Anyway, it is not difficult if you start teaching your kid timetable bit by bit. Some kids absorb faster and can learn that very fast. Both my kids managed to remember the timetables even before P1.

Memorising multiplication tables thru song is a good tool. My girl from CMA does that and now she knows the muliplication table for 2-9. Right now in her CMA, she is doing workbook for multiplication as follows :

Multiplication table for 8
8 x _ = 40
8 x _ = 56

So far she has no problem since she already knows her multiplication table well.. 😄

Hi Pen88n, what u had mentioned my girl is still doing in CMA but that was under the abacus book. They used the abacus to add 10 times for 2+2+2+...... but they have another book just for multiplication...And just this yr I think, they published a cd on all the songs for the formula like good frens , gd brother, multiplication table for parents to buy....but even if u dun buy, the teacher will still play multiplication song during every lesson.... 😄 my girls loves Cma so much that she said she will nvr want to quit....she said she wanted to become a human calculator....

HappyAvon,
Glad to hear your gal enjoying CMA. Previously, they do not have the multiplication song, so my gal learn her multiplication by memorising from the 2+2+2....10 times. She recite the 2,4,6,8, together with that and will remember after doing for a while. Now it is easier with the song.

My gal is older than your gal by a year (I think your gal is K2 right?). She has already finished the basic multiplication and division and is now doing 2 digit by 4 digit / 3 digit by 3 digit for multiplication and 5 digit by 2 digit for division.

Yr girl in advance class right? My DD is also in CMA but still basic level.
