            Hi,

I have this issue bugging in my mind since the last parent-teacher meet after the mid-year exam.

            Background:
I (the mum) - very hands on abt my gal
my gal - did very well in all subjects in P1 and P2. Had amazing teachers that 2 years. We work hard together to get her into the top class of P3. Then.....(this happen)....

My gal did not do well in Maths (50+ marks). Mainly very poor at Section C (problem sums). I was then asking the maths teacher how to go about to improve on the subject. i have problem understanding those questions myself 😞

The advise given to me was: concentrate on Section A & B - so least she can pass her final exam paper. No time to improve on Section C.

I was really uncomfortable right after the session. The more i thought about it, the more upset and distrubed i became. It was only right after the mid-year. There are another 4-5 months to go...how can the teacher advised me to tell my gal to give up on problem sums. Also, then how about when Pri 4,5,6 comes? Later i understand that each teacher has a 'quota' to hit - it will really look bad on them if their class did not score well on the subject they are teacher (true?).

Other problem with this teacher: worksheets given out but no follow up to finish them, mark them or do corrections with the children. So i did those worksheets and follow up on them myself. She will take 2 lesson to show the kids what floats on water and what's not. then when the lesson for this subject laspe, she used other subject period to make up for it. Thus, short-change on the 2nd subject.

I thought of complaining to MOE...(the principal is just as disappointing). This moves on to: i was quite disappointed with the new prinicipal...and her overall management style (i heard many teachers left after new principal came onboard). Not sure if she was trying to be friendly with the parents - during the new academic year speech, the principal actually uses 'market english' in her speech!! i was shocked!!

When any of the students have some acheivement or certifications, photos of the principal with the kid will be posted on the home page. Its like some commercialise advertisiment promoting own self.

i am a very hands on mum. Like many parents, I held a full time job. I try as much as possible to study with my gal. I just feel depressing when the school handles our kids with such causal attitude.

In addition to all of above, it is quite a popular school and yet this happens!

Has been thinking of transfer my gal to another school.

Can anyone advise if (1) i should feeedback to MOE or (2) transfer my gal out?

If (2), then what is the creteria and chance like? What should i?

i am not expecting a prestige school, but least one that is committed to bring the best in every kid and as educator, least be a responsbile one. It should not be just a job - they can make or break a kid's future. It is such an hornorable career...and yet....

think i have nagged enough....anyone to advise me?

              Dear Fusia,

Have you try to talk to other parents & c whether they’re having the same problem. I think the math teacher shouldn’t ask your kid to give up on Section C, this is the part where the difference of getting a 80 or 90 marks.

Meanwhile, get a assessment book on problem sums & try to do some everyday with your kid. I still believe that there is still sufficient time to do something though its about 1 month. Look through your child worksheet or exam papers to c which topic is the killer & focus on those. Math needs practice. There is no other way to improve except through practice & make sure she check her work.

For science, my children school also teaches very slow. But I don’t usually checked their work, so I’m not sure whether they’re marked a not.

Even if you change school, if the teacher are still like that, its back to square one. But I’m not stopping u to change school.

Go to popular & get a math assessment book on problem sums with

answers that shows working. Try to understand them during your free time.

Or you can post the question u don't know at the Forum category
Primary Schools - Academic Preparation & Support: p3 math at ksparents. Someone will try to solve for u.

Don't worry too much, just do whatever u can now & tell your kid not to give up.

                  Thank you, MyChildren 🙂

Think i was upset, disappointed, anxious and helpless. Now i try not to get too uptight about it but to take it slowly.

You are right - Maths is all about practising...there is no faster or short-cut way to it.

                  Thank you! 😄
