Hi does anyone have experience getting exemption from mother tongue for child with delayed speech? My DS in nursery has delayed speech and seeing speech therapist at KKH every month.

Is the exemption apply throughout primary school or depends on actual progress?

Any info on exemption from Mother tongue will be appreciated.

My son has mT exemption but that is becoz he was diagnosed with autism. Once exempted, it will be throughout his education. His psle will be based on 3 subjects instead of 4. We have not exercised that right yet since he is only pri 1.

I think phonics might help if your child cannot pronounce three-syllable words at one go. Phonics also improves spelling.

Its a bit like chopping up all the pronunciations of the word and then piece them together again 😄

                  hi

my boy in k2 n he's those v reserved type who didn't speak much in school or public
i am worried that he cannot speak well in P1 or at show n tell
my boy attends alot of enrichmt classes bt mainly they just teach him phonics, grammer, spelling etc nt much focus on speech

i am wondering is there any centre tt can teach kids to speak confidently n also read aloud?

my boy's teachers feedback to me he's quiet he's shy n maybe its character so ask me not to worry

bt i am worry cos me n hubby do not speak v well i do not wish my kid to follow our footsteps

myboy has attended JG group since nursery or even smaller bt I dun see results in him

hope someone can recommend one centre tt can focus on reading aloud n speech rather than academic 😓

Hi Mum, kids who has difficulty to express in words may resulted from different area. First, it may be throat muscles issues that impacted speech or difficulty in using the throat muscles to utter the words. Secondly, look into the child’s emotional needs. Give him the warmth, care and support he needed which may be lacking

My son’s speech therapist has advised us that we can enrol him in commercial classes like Speech & Drama. She does not encourage Phonics class as my son is too "focus" on alphabets. Any parents know of any speech & drama class good for speech delayed children?

                        Hi Sheryl,

How old is your boy? My boy is 28 months. He goes to daily playgroup. He has been seeing a speech therapist for the past 2 months after I realised that he is significantly behind in his speech, compared to his older siblings’ language development. His paed recommended the therapist,
I am also wondering if speech and drama classes would be good for him.
