This is a very informative forum and the parents here (kiasu or not) are all very helpful.
I came to this forum \"too late\" - July this year; if I had known earlier, would have better prepared my DS for DSA. For instance, was not aware that his primary school sending him to participate in the various Math Olympiads helps to some extend in DSA until I submit his particulars for DSA. -
So putting kids through the Math Olympiad competition does play a part in DSA?!! Oh dear......my DS isn't even in a Math Olympiad class to begin with! :nailbite:
So is it too late to enrol him in a course? Does it help in normal school work?

I am new to DSA and cannot say that Math Olympiad is necessary for DSA but when I was putting in particulars for NUSH application for DS, the pull-down selection had a few pre-defined (by system) Math Olympiad competition results. Minimum a bronze award in order to select which competition DS took part.So putting kids through the Math Olympiad competition does play a part in DSA?!! I know that some schools require at least a silver award before it can be indicated during application.
Maybe the well-informed ksp here can offer more advices............. -
DSA is for those who have exhibited exceptional ability in a particular academic domain, sport or aesthetic field over and beyond that of their peers. So if your child is planning to apply for DSA under Math domain, then of course Math Olympiad results are very important. If not, then it’s not important. It’s nice to have and may add on to the portfolio but not that important. What’s important is to excel in the domain you have applied under, be it English, HCL, etc.
For those applying under Math domain, even a Platinum award at SMOPS doesn’t guarantee you a DSA CO these days. Things have gotten very competitive. As scm292 mentioned, the drop down menus in some DSA online applications expect you to have minimum bronze/silver etc before they even recognize it as an award in the application.
If your child is interested in Math Olympiad style questions, then go ahead and sign him up for classes. But don’t view it as a tool to DSA success. See it more as a way to challenge him mathematically.
